La Pavoni Europiccola resto, can't remove steam knob

Postby sourland on Sat Mar 26, 2011 1:22 pm

Hi,

First post here. I have been reading a bunch though! I have 2 old Pavoni's. One machine was my daily user and one I got for parts. Sad to say they have been in a box for....15 years!

The older one is like this one, but it has the more modern square switch:

And also a newer one where the group head bolts on.
My plan is to restore both to operation. I want to start with the older one first.

My question:
I can't get the steam knob/shaft out of it's housing on the older one. The newer one just screws right out. Could it just be stiff and bound up? It screws out about 1/2 way and then binds up. Soaking in vinegar has not brought any relief.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Best,

Paul
on edit:
to clarify, its not the knob I'm trying to remove from the shaft, its the shaft/knob assembly from the T housing it is in.

thanks.

You have to loosen the nut that is visible, unscrew the shaft and then remove the plastic/bakelite knob. Slip the collared nut and bushing off, and you are left with just the shaft. This is because the shafts threads can't get past the collared nut as long as the bushing is there.

sounds like the hard shaft seal is blocking you from being able to unscrew the shaft. Loosen the retaining nut all the way and screw the shaft out ccw all the way while pulling hard in an outward direction. It is just stuck but there is nothing to break you turning and yanking on it until it comes out.

Thanks,

I got it finally...the seal had extruded itself over the threads. I turned it about a half a turn every 15 mins and it finally came out with some digging out of the seal.
