Is this Ponte Vecchio Lusso brain dead?

No low water probe and most importantly NO BRAIN. The Ponte Vecchio parts breakdown calls the black box mounted between the switch and the upper pilot light "Brain". I am pretty dubious about brains myself. I don't know what they will tell you but I would personally contemplate doing a brainectomy, unless this brain is a relatively inexpensive part, which I doubt, but do not know for sure since we have not bought one and PV does not give a price list, just an after the fact invoice for payment. the catch is with no brain the low water probe would not work, but everything else would function just fine with the safety coming from the overtemp switch and watching the water level in the sight glass tube.

Just a thought about a simple machine overcomplicating itself. Hope it works out.

Took my Lusso away for the weekend, it was working before I left, but DOA at my destination. I removed the shell, all of the wires were well connected and the red breaker didn't need to be reset. No lights, no power, nothing. (Yep, it's the newer model with the "brain")

Sorry to hear about the breakdown. Maybe it's time for Lusso brain bypass surgery?

John,
I know you're kidding, but that's actually a good idea. I'll get the switch from the old style Lusso and try to wire it up without the low water cut off feature. If it works, I'll just order a new switch.

No reason it would not work....just wire the hot side of the 110 through the pstat and overtemp switch to boiler circuit on one leg of the element and the white wire to the other pole of the switch and route it directly to the other boiler element terminal. There does seem to be some kind of wiring diagram on the side of the brain....I believe the right hemisphere. It's wired pretty much exactly as the La Pavoni and Cremina if you want to bypass your brain.

Thanks Doug. Looks like the hot side is already wired as you describe, power switch to low level cut-off light to pstat to safety switch to heating element. Coming out from the other side of the heating element, I moved that white wire from the brain to the power switch where the brain white wire was. Is that all? Do some wires leading to the brain need to be jumpered or disconnected? I assume this path defeats the low level water cut-off feature. Will I have to live without it?

Sometimes you need to get away from it and think about it, instead of staring at a mass of wires and trying to figure what to do. A few of the connectors have two wires.

If you are going to perform a brain ectomy on the Lusso, I suggest you disconnect all of the wires and rewire as "Orphan" Doug indicates above, using the single wire connectors. Bypass the low level light, the low level boiler fitting and the brain. Without the brain, the low level cut-off won't work anyway. If you keep enough water in the machine you won't have to worry about not having this feature. Previous Lusso models didn't have a low water level cut-off.
