How to know how old a Brunella is?

Postby grada on Sun Jan 31, 2010 5:14 am

As I told I bought an Brunella new in the box. This one is completely different from the one I already had. I would really like to know how old my two machines are. Can somebody tell me how I can tell? I saw on the forum that if you screw off the part on the bottom there will be a year but what if there is no date visible?

You could ask Brunella if she remembers the well-intentioned Lina Merlin

Grada,

It seems there is some variation on where the production date is stamped into the Brunella machines, but on mine it is small, but stamped into the casting.

On my 110v (older machine with no thermostat), the date is stamped on the side small ridge of the heating element. It takes some effort to see it, you may need a flashlight or magnifier. On my 220v machine (with pilot light and thermostat) it is stamped on the underside of the base just behind the drip tray area.

Yes, in both cases, you will need to remove the bottom plate to access the underside of the machine to find the date stamp. I have tried to show this in my posting of the 2 Brunellas, on the 3rd and 4th photos. It is much easier to see the stamp on the 220v machine. Take a look here: A tale of two brunellas.

Let us know how things are going between the two machines, pics would be nice too...it would be great to add them to that posting I started! Look forward to hearing more,

Thanks Tyler,

But unfortunately there is nothing to find on the red one. The orange one has a date: 10-73 so fairly "new".
I think the red one is older. However with a temperature light as on the red one. They are both 220volts. Very handy when you live in Holland......
The reason I think the red one is older is because of the screws used. The orange one has Philipsscrews, the red one has not.
However the the button on the lid as well as the handle looks more modern.
If I can find the time I will put some pictures on the site. The thing I most like about the red one is the fact that is complete never used and still in it's original box.
Just out of curiosity because I don't want to sell, do you know what these machines will do if on sale?

Hi Grada,

It is hard to say what a "new in box" Brunella might sell for.....almost certainly it is the only one that exists.

To offer a degree of perspective, I paid about $300 US after shipping/fees for each Brunella that I have.

I have seen only two others for sale. One currently on Sorrentina Coffee's site in Australia for $744 AU, and another on eBay Italy recently "Buy it now" for $300 Euro (+/- $420 US).

These machines are so rarely up for sale, it's difficult to say what a price might be, especially considering the premium your unused machine could command....maybe $650-$850 US ????

Should you decide to let it go, let me know : )

I'm looking forward to pulling some shots tomorrow with my Brunellas...have some nicely rested Ambrosia Espresso as well as Basalatic Bourbon Blend ready to grind on my new Vario.

How are you enjoying yours?

Hello Tyler

Well I am very fortunate than. My orange one was found on a carboot sale. I paid 8 euro. And the one "new in the box" came my way from Marktplaats (a Dutch Ebay) for 200 euro. I like the orange one best. It was so funny because I knew nothing aboiut Brunella's I just thought it was a funny machine.
I really like the coffee from the machine. I did not use the red one. I want to keep it in tip top condition. So a just have a peek at it sometimes. Can you tell me why they are not for sale? Are they rare? All broken? Nobody wants to sell?

Greetings from Holland, Grada
(Now that I know my 'new in the box machine' is a must have I keep my adress a secret :D

Hello all brunella lovers
Yesterday I bought my "new" Brunella from E-Bay.I have not received it yet.The problem so far is that there is not any portafilter.I want your support to find out what portafilter is compatible with Brunella. It's missing the grill as well but that is not very important.Meantime ,due to I live in Italy I'll try to find out where I can find original parts.I hope that will work !!!!????
Thank you all

The Brunella Parts page on Orphan Espresso leads me to believe that the Ponte Vecchio portafilter body fits the Brunella.

OE is in the states, but if it's a confirmed fit you'd probably have better luck sourcing a PV portafilter in Italy then finding an original Brunella (if there's any difference).

Hi Nikos,

Congrats on your Brunella purchase, too bad it didn't come with a portafilter....hard to use without one : (

I think it will be very difficult to find an original Brunella portafilter, since they are likely long since out of production.

Yakster is right, though, in that Brunella uses a 45mm portafilter (as is the PV). I just checked as I have an old SAMA (PV) portafilter also at 45 mm that is not an exact fit, but with some filing down of the ears, should be a functional replacement. However, I didn't use it to make espresso....When i do, I can report back, but this is probably your best bet to source a PV portafilter from Orphan, or from an European supplier, and file down the ears if necessary, and at least get you started.

Hope this helps,

Tyler

Thank you for your replies.
Brunella finally arrived and tested in terms of the functionality. The machine seems that works properly. I plugged in the electric current (I didn't see any on/off switch),and after some minutes the light of the thermostat switched off (stopped the warming up) .
The red colour is nice and seems that is the manufactory's. No rust in the tank. No rust up on the Lever.
Problems:
1. The portafilter is missing
2.The metallic base of the lever has a small broke from the one side .That does not affect the movement but when a pressure is applying !!????
3. Is missing the grill.

I like the machine but before buying all these parts (which probably will cost more than 100E) I'll wait to find at E-Bay or an open market another used one much cheaper. I'll upload photos the forthcoming weekend.
Cheers
