so some of you chrome peacock lovers are going to like this...
as I mentioned above I have been reading through a lot of old posts because I've never been really satisfied with this machine. From day one I took some rude temp measurements and didn't feel like the water temp was high enough. I called and talked to the European Gifts and Houseware who I bought the machine from but their tech said the pressure stat was not adjustable and so I was going to have to deal with it or send it back. I elected to go at it myself which several times I have regretted. Flash forward five plus years. Today I mustered up a pressure gauge modification feeling it was absolutely necessary to troubleshoot the machine. I will admit that I did some soul searching in the process and am a little embarrassed to say I avoided messing with my EP too much because I really like the aesthetics of it unmodified. I will detail the pressure gauge modification if anyone is interested at a later date, but the reader's digest is that the sight tube cap on my EP is the same size and thread pitch of a 1/4" / 6 mm. compression connector, so the only real work around we figured with what was on hand at my local hardware was that connector with a 1/8" to 1/4" hex bushing to take it back to a 1/4" male pipe and then a coupler to connect it to the 1/4" pipe male end of the pressure gauge. Also purchased some good steam rated pipe thread goo and a set of tamper proof star hex keys for the base bolt.
Now, the pressure gauge is attached and seems to be working well. The pressure stat kicks the heating element on at .5 bar / 7.25 psi and kicks it off at .65 bar / 9.5 psi. I've been watching it cycle for a while and it's now pretty consistent. After I released the false pressure it ran up to nearly a bar once, but I haven't seen it do that again.
Guess it's time to fiddle with the pressure stat and maybe to invest in a adjustable one if I break it. Another big thanks to everyone who has helped me out on the path to fixing this thing!
edit: I pulled the base off and disconnected the pressure stat. I picked at the glue and was able to free the plastic ring w/out breaking it (luckily

) - it seems that the tighter down you screw it onto the prongs the higher the setting goes. I'm up to .6 bar it cycles on and .7 bar off.
edit x2: it looks like cycling on at .75 bar and off at .85 bar is as tight as I'm going to get the pressure stat. we'll see how the coffee tastes in the morning.
