Home levers users: Why no Robur or K10?

Postby joatmon on Mon Sep 27, 2010 4:25 pm

OK, home lever heads. Most of us using home levers, ie. LaPavoni, Cremina, La Peppina, Arrarex Caravel, etc., are satisfied with grinders that most pump machine fanatics wouldn't even consider passable. It appears to me that many lever heads have hand grinders and Mazzer Minis. Now, all the pump guys want Roburs. They will settle for a K10 if their significant other gives a thumbs down to the Robur's size or cost.

But, the lever heads dream of finding a nice Cremina at a garage sale for $200 or finding a misspelled Arrarex Caravel on Italian eBay for 20 euros. I see little talk of ginders other than someone running a victory lap after finding an old hand grinder.

But, I could be wrong,

I suspect lever heads are more price conscious... Espresso is quite expensive sport...

I think you're right on that one. Reality is for a few hundred a hobby barista can get into it and enjoy good shots like the big guys. Plus nothing kills old world romance of a lever like a big honking Robur beside it. That said, I just picked up a La San Marco to sit beside my Mazzer SJ. (Yeah, I know... I'm two faced...lol).

doubleOsoul: La San Marco lever machine?

As for the starting post, if I read you correctly: I'd love to find a cheap Mazzer or comparable grinder. However, the market isn't old enough. We need to get to the point in time when people find old, dust covered mazzers and konas in their dead relatives attic - and then sell the "worthless" pieces of junk.

No other reason than it just looks very, very silly.

I use a K10WBC when I grind for shots on my MCaL & I never considered a Robur when shopping for a conical. Since I have a Bunn G3 on the kitchen counter my wife could care less if my K10 is a little shorter then a Robur.

At least one leverhead on here uses two Ninos for his lever machines, right Michael??

I've got a large conical too. It looks about as ridiculous as the combination shown above.
I didn't buy it new. I got lucky since there are very few second hand large conicals. I bought it for the price of a second hand SJ.

Due to my poorly worded original post, I should have stated that I was referring to folks who use the lever exclusively on lets say, 90%+ of the time.

A companion question to those using home levers with a titan grinders is this, "Does the titan grinder make as much difference in the cup as it does on a pump machine?"

Dwarfs that La Peppina. The Vario is a much better scale (apologies for the image quality).

p.s. That can of French Market coffee is filled with Baking Soda in the event of kitchen fires, not coffee.
