Gotta brag about my Olympia Cremina 67!

Postby Coffeecritter on Fri Nov 16, 2007 5:30 pm

Please forgive the brag, but I just received my first lever machine: an Olympia Cremina 67, serial #7516169!

I paid a bit of a premium on eBay for her because she came from the original owner and appeared to have been very gently used.

Well! In corresponding with the seller, I found that she was coming from Tunisia!!! :o Via diplomatic pouch!
He assured me that she was packed well (in her original carton and a padded outer box). She arrived yesterday at our post office. When I went to get her this morning the clerk looked at the ticket and exclaimed, "Oh! That's that HEAVY one!" and got a cart to fetch the package.

I got home and started unpacking. There were at least 5 different newspapers used. (Fascinating what one can infer about someone by looking at their newspapers!) Everything was tightly wrapped in original packing material Image

She has some very small scratches on the right side panel, but otherwise shows little wear. Nice deep brown color. I filled her up - no leaks! Flipped the switch and all the lights came on. The boiler made brisk noises. I hauled out the 3-page instructions from the Olympia website and proceeded to load a double basket - same grind as this morning's for the Elektra. No 49mm tamper, so I used a spice bottle to mash down the coffee. Bled the false pressure (a little dried milk shot out of the steam arm), warmed up the portafilter and the group by pulling through about 120 ccs water (a few old coffee grinds there), and pulled .............

a VERY acceptable shot of espresso! (Sweet, syrupy, nice crema) No leaks!

She came with 6 double baskets, a single, a blind basket, the original plastic frothing pitcher and a cute little knockbox.

Sometimes a gamble pays off.

Wow! That's really cool. Glad to see it arrived from its long trip undamaged. Lots of nice extra's, too. Congrats and happy pulling.

Yeah! Very sweet! Is the front panel brushed chrome or polished? I'm jealous.

It's brushed.

I'm sure my nice first shot was merely beginner's luck, but it sure made my day!

Great get coffeecritter. It is very similar to the 73 model I scored off Australian ebay a year ago. Yours seems even better because it has been used and doesn't seem to need new seals, as mine did, immediately. (Mine was in storage for years before going on the bay). Trust me even the oldies like we've got are GREAT machines

PS Check your PMS for a message from me.

It probably does not need new seals because I already purchased a replacement set in anticipation of needing them. I figured that any 30 year old machine had to have stiff seals. Not the case here - but only because I now have a replacement set.

Yes I was watching that one closely on Ebay. It seemed to be a great snatch and you have just confirmed it as a fact! Congratulations! :D

Congratulations Coffeecritter, it looks like you've got a real find! Looking forward to more posts as you gain experience with the Cremina. I doubt there's many more like it in our neck of the woods.
I wasn't born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could!

Nice machine! We should all insist on double-boxed shipping by diplomatic pouch.
