Gaggia Orione Lever Restoration of Epic Proportions - HELP! - Page 3

Postby rick meinig on Tue Dec 22, 2009 5:04 pm

How is the progress? I've been using my Orione through the holidays and knock on wood , its working great. I roasted some kopi luwak and served a pound of it...did have a brief scare when the lever briefly was stuck...

I'm putting back the boiler and all the piping inside the frame. I had to hammer out a dent in the boiler and decide which pipes to use off the 3 machines... which were best. Will post some more pics of the refurb in a day or so. I will not be using the curved copper side panels, the flat copper face panels or the hotel pots, so if anyone is interested let me know. I decided to go with all stainless panels and a new look for the exterior.

Here is what I'll be getting rid of. I have several of the original gaggia valves for steam and water (not rebuilt and they need it) I also have an extra boiler, 2 frames, 2 mercury p-stats, 1 heating element and several hotel pots as well as the brass and copper body panels. All trades considered.

I just aquired a similar but very different Gaggia Orione IGU

I purchased this one from a Pawn shop in Nebraska and it had some pictures and a list in it stating that it belonged to a Fred Hayman from Bevelery Hills, CA, and a list of celebrates that it severed over the years.

It has several parts that say GAGGIA on them, including many of the cast brass parts, all of the copper is solid copper and brazed, and all of the brass is solid brass and brazed, this unit looks hand built. Even the pressure gauges say Gaggia and are in metric.

Inside of the oval dome lid, it has a hand stamp that reads: REED AND BARTON, SILVER SOLDERED, 1322, 11.

The serial tag reads: GAGGIA, Milano, Robecco s.N., Tipo ORIONE IGU, Made in ITALY, Matr 25277, V. 110, ANCC, W. 1500.

It has all the pieces, and all the internals, but appears to need new seals, and possibly a "rebuild".

I could really use some help on where to start with the rebuild, where to get prints, parts, electronics, seals, etc, etc. And if you have any spare or extra parts, I would be very interested.
