Gaggia Factory Nut Size

Postby Jim Williams on Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:35 pm

Hello all,

While 'investigating' how my Gaggia Factory is built, I managed to spring a leak from where the steam valve body meets the boiler. The steam valve body can now be moved clockwise and counter-clockwise.

I took the group off the machine, peered inside, and saw that the valve body is threaded into a nut that is located inside the boiler. Does anyone know what size this nut is?

thanks

Jim

What happened to the nut that was there?

Cliff,

The nut is still there. I need to get a socket onto it to snug it up, and nothing I have will fit it.

thanks

have not looked inside mine as of yet, but I'm SURE it's metric... could be 10mm could be 13mm (but if it was that, a 1/2in socket would fit)... could easily be 14mm or so... don't know without looking. I'll see if I can put a mirror down inside tonight and see what I can find out.

Thanks Steve.

I put a 14 mm on it last night and it didn't fit.

I guess the upside is that I'll get to buy a new socket to go along with my massive E61 sockets and wrenches :D

Well, I guess I've been working on "foreign" cars for too long... I've got complete sets of SAE and Metric sockets from tiny (2mm and 1/16in) up to massive (40mm and over 3 in)... Being a Field Engineer for years didn't hurt either! :D

I'll see what I can find out tonight... could be 10mm (or even smaller, but I doubt it) or 12mm or some such...

if the nut is the same as the Pavoni then it is 16mm and a bit of a pain to get to. i disassembled one of mine today. i found a wrench was easier to use than a socket.

If you remove the group from the Gaggia, you can see the front of the nut and access it by using a socket (if you have the right size  ) on an extension. Is the Pavoni different?

i was not able to get a 3/8" drive 16mm socket through the group opening (a 1/4" drive might, i don't have one), and found it easier to use a wrench coming in through the boiler cap. ymmv. i will look again today, keep in mind that the nut is brass and not terribly hard, so be careful not to round it.

ah, I had thought about coming down through the boiler cap opening but was afraid of the angle. It's good to know that it is possible to do it that way.

I'll work on it tonight and report back with the results.
