Cimbali M20 lever rebuild - Page 3

Postby craigcharity on Wed Nov 30, 2011 6:08 am

I got the springs from a company here in Cape Town who ordered them from Italy. Most probably nuova ricambi.

Doug: I bought 2 machines, a 2 group lever and a 1 group hx 'normal' group, so all i have done is swapped groups. Have you ever used a m20 lever?

Here is what the parts look like after the acid wash, he used a brightening solution to get them this color, and the cool thing is it looks like they dont fade/oxidize.

Here is a pic of the old piston rod, it has a 12mmx1mm thread on the bottom so my friend used his lathe to cut the thread as a Die-Nut was super hard to find.

This is all the new wiring,

I put a needle valve in before the hx so I can adjust the flow without having to change a jet/gicleur, seems to work well.

Here are some pics of the hx pipe, this is to feed the cold water from the tap to the bottom of the hx tube which will push out the hot water from the top of the tube through to the group. I used 2 teflon pipes to insulate the pipes cos I thought that the cold water passing really close to the hot water about to go into the group head would cool it down pretty fast.

I used a thick piece of wood and drilled 3 holes for some threaded bar so I could compress it, it was much safer this way. I put it in a friends hydraulic press and it didnt work out too well:)

And finally.... Im my kitchen, I am going to leave the panels off for now so I can test it for leaks but she seems to work really well. here is the 3rd shot I pulled on it

That is fantastic! It's an inspiration for my M-15 2 group project that is coming along nicely, but has stalled in recent weeks.

I like the way the brass turned out, and the shot pictured looks tasty! Please post more pics of the finished project, it's beautiful :)

Crossposted from Lever Espresso Machine Gallery: Craigcharity, I am liking that M20. Does that lever group move smoothly? I understand that there are two springs and it appears that there are two knuckles. How does that change the piston travel?

Thanks guys.

Chert, i am not sure of how the 2 knuckles affect the piston travel. The piston travels enough to give me a relatively full double espresso. I measured the pressure and it starts around 10.5 bar and finishes off at about 5ish. Check out my video on the thread about lever machine video routines.

The hole in the cam where the pin goes through to secure it to the piston shaft is badly warn and is now oblong so I am going to have to get it drilled out to a 14mm and put a bush in to reduce the hole to 10mm again.

I am so flipping impressed with the shots from this machine. The hx makes a full pre infusion pretty easy. And the gouphead zits about 2mm from the boiler flange due to the ring that fits outside the hx tube and the fact that my gouphead was not from a hx machine so the back of the group head by the flange does not have a recess for the hx and therefore sits slightly further away when compressed against the boiler flange.
