Confused about Zacconi portafilter size

Postby Ron_L on Mon Dec 19, 2011 3:11 pm

I bought a used Zacconi Espresso Baby on Friday and the seller included a hand made cherry wood tamper, but it's a poor fit. I'd like to buy a better tamper and also a bottomless PF, but I'm confused as to what I need.

Here is the machine...

It is badges with the ZG logo and looks identical to the Espresso Baby on the Zacconi Workshop web site...

But, I have seen machines that look similar but badged as Riviera and others. All of the information I have read on here, other forums, and the OE site says that the Riviera Baby has a 45mm group. The guy who I bought this one from said that it was 49mm. I don't have a set of calipers, and don't know where to borrow a set, but I used a stick ruler to eyeball the interior of the double basket. It is clearly not 45mm, and to my eyes it looks like it is 51mm. Is that possible?

Does anyone else have this same machine? I saw an older post that showed a picture of the same machine with the same badge. I'm curious what others are using for tampers and if you've sourced a bottomless PF.

Thanks...

Basket size depends on how old the machine is...newer ones are 49mm ...by the looks of the logo this may be a newer model.

Thanks, Doug...

Here is the result of my not-so-scientific measurement...

I received a reply to my e-mail to the Zacconi Workshop this morning...

Hello,

the right size is 50-51 mm.

Best regards

That seems to confirm my rough measurement.

I may take the basket to the local hardware store (locally owned, not a big box) to see if they have calipers available.
