sweaner,
Looks like your method will work best for me when I use this machine. How do you control the temperature after you pour in the boiling water? Is there alot of surfing involved?

I keep a thermometer in the boiler, and adjust the thermostat to get what I am looking for. My thermostat still works fairly well, and the heater has no trouble keeping the water boiling if I desire, even on the 110v.

you could rip the guts out- and install a butane burner under the kettle. I think the burners I sell would work. Boiling the water from one would take forever (if at all)- but if you stared with boiling water from a kettle I think the butane burner would keep the temp up and adjustable too... Gas powered Caravel... perfect for travel?

If I was to get the local element manufacturers to make me one what you you be willing to pay? I am happy to look into it.

I have been thinking about a butane burner too, but there really isn't a lot of room under the boiler. You could probably squeeze the burner in there somehow, with some modifications (air must be able to stream up around the sides of the boiler for instance), but the butane bottle would need to be outside.

Then there is the matter of temperature control. Can the bimetal + micro switch still be used somehow?

I sell refillable butane burners- so no need for a bottle. You fill them from butane canisters used to fill cigarette lighters. Flame is adjustable- and I think one would fit just about perfect inside the caravel. You may want to attach hinges on the base for easy removal and refilling... If you are keen I will happily give you a discount on the burner as I would like to see if a gas powered 'Travel off the Grid' Caravel is possible...

The one I have now has started working again with the new heater, but I have been keeping my eyes open for another Caravel for a couple of weeks now - if I find one with the right price tag, why not, it is a good idea.
