Bottomless La Pavoni Portafilter NEEDED

Postby !Neurogenesis on Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:45 pm

Hey H-B!

I have been working with my La Pav Millennium Pro for about a year and it's time to step up the game and get a bottomless portafilter. I am a student and don't have the tools or space to chop my own, so I wanted to ask: is there anyone out there who wants to get rid of an old bottomless La Pav Millennium PF or knows of somewhere I could get one/have one made.

I am in Cleveland, OH if this makes any difference.

Thanks!

Will

Various vendors will modify it for you, e.g., Lino or Espressoparts. Searching on "modify portafilter" found Best option for bottomless portafilter? If you want to save money, stop by your local machine shop or even an autobody repair shop. It's barely a 10 minute job.

Did someone say Naked Portafilter?? :-)

La Pavoni DIY Naked Portafilter

Does your school have a machine shop? Sounds like a project you could farm out to them.

Or you might check with these guys:

They are a local coffee roaster here in town. I have bought beans from them in the past. I don't know what they charge exactly (as far as modifying a portafilter), but you can certainly inquire.

I think changing to a bottomless portafilter is a great idea. It was one of the best things I ever did, as far as improving the shots from my La Pavoni.

Good luck!

Although its for the Ponte Vecchio Lusso, here's my story of today :)

I had just received a second portafilter so I wanted to make the old one a naked. I looked here and saw that this was possible with hole-saws or multiple small holes, all followed with sanding or filing. Before trying this, I went by the technical workplace of my university. There was a very nice guy with some spare time and a very nice machine that cut the bottom off within 2-3 minutes. Below are the results.

You might want to check up if there's no big machines and nice guys around your area - perhaps a 10-20$ fee for the work if they require it, but it might just be that showing respect to the big machines is enough :)

I trimmed the bottom off mine today in the lathe, went ahead and made the heavyweight tamper while I was turning, should work alright as long as I dont drop it on my toe :lol:Image

I just went bottomless tonight. My dad used to do metal work, so he easily turned my old Europiccola portafilter into a bottomless beauty.

I use my iPod touch as a timer, and just this morning there was coffee all over the screen. I usually get around this with a small fellini that soaks the basket face first before pulling the shot. This morning one got away from me. You can't win all the time. LOL!
