RayJohns wrote:Drill slowly; chatter is your friend. Cutting through your portafilter with that saw is like playing the violin, not the drums. You need a little vibration in the process, to help you get through.

Also, since you are using a rather large drill there, be careful of interference and binding on the edge of the portafilter basket area. In fact, I would go so far as to apply grease to help avoid a binding situation that could cause the drill to twist and hurt you. Go. Slow; it's not a race. What you want to do is chip the brass out, more than cut the brass.

It's not like drilling a hole into a block of metal. This is more like death by a thousand tiny chips in a circle. You'll see what I mean when you start. Don't worry if it chatters and vibrates - that's just part of the process that will ultimately cut through.

I would also put tape of some sort on the outside of the portafilter, in order to protect the finish.

Having performed two spout-ectomies with a hand-held drill - using RayJohn's fine instructions - I can vouch for great results without using a drill press. (That said, if I had owned a drill press, it would have been difficult for me to have resisted using it, regardless of how friendly the chatter may have proved.)

After all my complaining about pumps  my Strega arrived yesterday. Well package and survived the trip.
Filled the reservoir, flipped the switch to fill the boiler and to my surprise the quietest pump ever! ooops pump not coming on. It's heard my bad rap on pumps and noise. Turns out it was just a sensor connection on top of the boiler.
The micro fine basket arrived today too so I just used it for the first shot. Had some 3 week old med. roast Burundi I thought I'd use just to get close with first.
Fairly fine grind, 18gm. went with about an 8sec pre. pump. gave a nice fine tail and a very decent first shot. I've got several nice light roasts to play with over the weekend.
I think I'm really going to like the Strega. The ability and process to build that extra power in the pre-infusion that I don't think I can duplicate with the Cremina without negatively effecting the rest of the pull.
