FWIW, my 1.0 has little if any "drawback", including those occasions when I do a Fellini. My lifts are slow and gentle. Are the backups of coffee coming from your 2nd pull? Is the drawback due to a different version than mine? I can't imagine using a filter for such a little bit of coffee. I know some pro baristas use paper filters on some of their competition drinks. Not sure why, as I dwell in amateur-land!

Drawback is minimal if any. I use it when making two shots as it keeps the screen clean for next shot. No need to pass water or clean just pull. Allows me to also use water from tank for Americanos immediately. Don't use on second cup.

So the bottomless portafilter that came with my Caravel has gotten out of round (too much torquing?) and the ones from Gabor are currently out of stock... So I decided to 3D print one using some protopasta high temp PLA. The heat cured print is shown below. Works well and after 5 shots the ears still look fine. Current version is a little hard to tighten by hand (my own design flaw) so I might modify to make it a little more hand friendly.

Where can I find photos of this feature? I have a Caravel that seems to have this feature, but I'm not sure it is what is described here.orphanespresso wrote: Oh yes, one more feature, the rarest and most desireable of all is the kettle lid "raiseattore" . a very few models have a tiny machined lever system on the front of the kettle lid that acts to raise the kettle lid about 1/2 inch. It does nothing else but this, and the trouble they went through for that little device is amazing.

Mine is a VAM, but I don't have that tiny lever, no.crazy4espresso wrote:It was an early model VAM feature, not a Caravel one.

Click on the link above to confirm if you have a VAM or Caravel. If you do have VAM and don't have the lid with the lever it was swapped out at some point.

A number of the early model Caravels (without lever) had VAM embossed on the base.

Early Caravels from 1.0 - 1.2 shared some casting and other parts. As the models progressed the Caravels stepped further away from the VAM. Having gone through 4 of these I found the real leap happened past 1.2 when the Caravel lost the metal twist knob at the back to release the boiler.
What was not carried over to the Caravel was the VAM symbol (Crowned Head) or the the lift lever for the lid. I have an early Caravel that came with metal brass coloured handle ends while by VAM has the silver coloured ones.
