I made my Dow 111 purchase and look forward to giving it a go.... Indeed there will be a few machines coming off the shelf for a thorough lubing...

Welcome!

Hey, does anyone know - is there is a particular name that distinguishes one model from another on the Caravels? We received (YAY!) both of the ones we were waiting for on the same day (like a REALLY good birthday - got exactly what we wanted!), and fortunately, they are of two different models. But not sure exactly how to 'name' them correctly!

Both have black handles (one unfortunately broke in shipment so I'll have to fix that!), both have ships, no sphinx. The orange one has 2 o-rings in the cylinder, no seals on the piston. The Silver one has 2 U-cup seals on the piston, none in the cylinder. We hopefully have a u-cup on the way that will work on the silver one. LOL - they would have been a LOT easier to source if the Italians had used square profiles instead of ones that were taller than they are wide!

Cool, sounds very familiar! The orange one is the newest model (same as mine), while the silver one... hmm, I seem to remember that there were two different types that had two seals on the piston... Greg?

My Caravel is taking a break... the pf/group seal bulges out in one area, so I cannot get a good seal. It gave me a chance to take everything apart and clean it... only a little coffee oil inside the piston and a bit lining the piston cylinder. Such a great design!

Ni How Ma Henry? Why is your O-ring bulging? Hmmm, both of ours have a regular flat portafilter gaskets - does yours have an o-ring like a La Peppina or a Pavoni?

Good to know the orange is the newer one! I wonder, is the color relevant to the seal system - in otherwords, did they change the color when they changed the system, or was that change only coincidental? The silver one is finished now, and it makes a great cup - it's amazing how easy it is to move the lever, until you're actually making a cup of espresso, then WOW!

Ni hao! :) Sorry, I don't think I was using the right words- I should have said gasket. It puckered up in one area and I haven't gotten around to putting it back in place. I would love to get a hold of a new gasket 'cause I have to tighten the pf quite hard to prevent leaking

I think you might be right- that they changed the colors with each generation. IIRC, Timo's orange model is the same design as mine, and I've only seen silver or cream for the older models (with the non-wraparound lever handle grip).

Henry.....

sorry to let the thread go stale before posting. We have been using both the orange and the grey Caravels for a couple of weeks and find little difference in performance, though the orange, seems to have a bit more resistance in the pull. Due to the different seal system? Great espresso, but we can't seem to get away from that watery puck. Portafilter gasket is a snap. both of the originals in our two Caravels puckered after about a week and now are all replaced and working fine.
