My feeling is that black goes better with straight lines and curvy objects look better in color.

Whatever the color, my vote would be to retain the 1950s/1960s colors "feel." Personally, I like Hamilton Beach green. Fits with the era. I know, it's my era. :D

orphanespresso wrote:OK RJ, you don't seem to like black. I think that was what you implied. So what color then? I dunno, our kitchen leans to stainless and it seems basic black goes with stainless......but I have the full palette to choose from since the machines need painting. any suggestion would be fine....but no puce or fancy exotic colors, and no taupe since I got pretty tired of that on an old car I restored. Ferrari red...I have never seen a Ferrari let alone a red one so I couldn't say. RJ, do you have swatches?

I'll let Jack, henry and the REAL Caravel crowd weigh in on that one. I'd probably go with the OEM color that matches the vintage (design characteristics) of the various models.
Someone WILL want hot pink, though. Don't be looking in my direction!

Me thinks a red/orange like the one that came round about to visit me is a fetching hue. Wish she could have stayed!!

Good to be getting a smattering of opinion.....I like to duplicate the color as close as possible but then always kindof regret not getting creative instead of rigorous in the restoration. Good point on the straight lines curvy lines...hadn't thought of it that way but an old Mercedes looks great in black, square lines, and an old Jaguar XKE looks great in colors, all curvy. And I think that old jadeite appliance green is good as well. Silver hammertone comes just right without any special color matching, and that is pretty much the silver color exactly. What to do.....

What to do? Consider offering custom color choice to the buyer?

Jeez, I'm kindof getting sorry I axed. Maybe just a machine in primer with a few cans of Krylon, your choice of colors? A kit of sorts.....along the lines of paint by number. Missed the super bowl tie ins with the Caravel chip and dip set....guacamole in the kettle with chips in the tray.

Hate to say it, but Raiders colors would rock, as someone posted earlier...silver and black.
I love that cream color.

Sorry Doug, I probably should have PM'd the Garnet and Gold comment to Rob. Couldn't resist a little good natured poking. Ah well, at least it wasn't blue and orange (UF colors). Seriously, I think the classic colors of Silver, Black, Red and Yellow are hard to beat. Not sure about the tangerine color, but different strokes as they say. I also liked your suggestion of Jadite green, very retro. Cheers!

To a UM (The "U") grad, the Gator evokes horrible images...haha
Hopefully back on topic, Doug mentions on the Orphan Espresso web site that all iterations of the Caravel produce basically the same results. Why did the inventor proceed to do so many un-cost effective changes for so simple a machine?

Hi All,

Newbie to the forum, but very informative, thank you!

I am considering getting a caravel from Italy, but am wondering how it will go in my country.

I am in Australia, and we have 240V as standard, whereas the Italian machines are 220V I believe. Because they are so similar in voltage would the process be as simple as getting a plug adapter and switching it on?

I would hate to get one of these great machines over here only to have problems with conversions.

Also as a side issue, what would a fair price from a private seller be for one of these in great working condition?

Thanks in advance for your help

Daniel

Hello Daniel, I can answer this part- the Caravel is quite un-sensitive to voltage and hertz... IIRC, peacecup use his 220V Caravel on American 110V for a while, and here in China we (usually  ) have 240V and the Caravel works fine.

I'm not sure what plugs you use in Australia, but changing the entire electric cord is a very simple operation.
