Arin spring lever

Postby ManualWorker on Wed May 25, 2011 2:01 pm

Greetings to all lever enthusiasts out there. I just purchased an old lever "Arin" from a Spanish site. The machine needs some serious TLC, but more seriously, the (tiny) filter that came with it has some cracks in it and I'm sure it won't work once I get up and going. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement? It's 53mm, but according to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhq0f74zOmM, neither Saeco nor Spaziale filters will work. Apart from the inestimable resource of Mr Ceccarelli http://www.francescoceccarelli.eu/arin.htm and the video snippet on YouTube, I can't seem to find any info on these machines on the internet.

I've seen a few Arins around, but nobody has written about one here. I hope you get it working so we can see how the espresso is.

You might want to check with Orphan Espresso to see if they have a basket that might fit.

Also, this site here (http://www.francescoceccarelli.eu) has some more information on the Arin.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Beautiful machine! I love the style.

First I've heard of it though, so I can't offer any help re the baskets...

I'll have to refurbrish my new home before starting work on this one. Eventually it will end up as the "work enabler" in my new music studio in the basement. Rather looking forward to that... Until then I hope to have found a solution to the filter problem. Stay tuned

If you can measure that up and post the measurements in mm, I can compare that against both an Isomac 53mm basket and an SM basket - both nominally 53mm, but not exactly identical at all - the SM being ever so slightly bigger.

Here's a side view of the filter basket. It's actually 52mm inside diametre, 53,4 outside (underneath the rim). Depth 16mm tapering from 6 mm to a diametre of ca 33mm.

Hi

The Isomac 53mm single basket is:

54.6mm under the lip
60 mm diameter at the rim - biggest possible measurement
20.5mm high
+- 35mm diameter across the flat at the bottom
+- 11mm vertical before the flat.

The depth seems to be the biggest issue.

The SM basket is bigger, too big to fit in an Isomac portafilter, so from your sizing I assume it's of no use.

Thanks a bunch v12man. That seems to be just a tad too big as there isn't much extra room in that portafilter. I'm waiting for an answer from Barb over at OE on the issue. If he can't help I suppose it's a lost case...

I don't really have a clue about metalwork, but I'm starting to wonder whether it would be possible to fix the old one by soldering or some related technique?

As they say in French : affaire à suivre.

Cheers!

Is the room in there for a double basket? The whole thing has a Gaggia look to it but they are 58mm all the way. Maybe an Olympia big basket. Or a twist basket or enen a Bacchi, if it would hold a double.
