Pulse button makes Espresso Easy

If you have an espresso machine, you will enjoy the convenience of being able to grind directly into the filter basket for your machine. After you remove the coffee grounds bin, you can insert your filter basket (portafilter) directly under the dispensing chute to collect the coffee as it is being dispensed. You can push the pulse button with your thumb while holding the filter basket for true one hand operation.

The "settling thwump" is well reported in many dosing techiniques but was shown to us to perfection by a friend who uses a Versalab grinder, again, very fluffy tall piled grind, an initial thwump on the counter corner to settle, a finger sweep, and a fairly firm tamp for both lever and pump machines.

Secondly, a quality home coffee grinder will produce a more even grind, ensuring all the delicious flavors get extracted without extracting too many of the bitter compounds that exist in coffee.

So while we personally prefer something in the medium brown range, we're glad we now understand why all the dark roast lovers out there are such ardent fans. If you want to learn more about roasting and blending -- as well as pretty much anything else to do with coffee -- we highly recommend picking up Kenneth Davids' book. Right now, however, you can check out his handy reference table after the jump.
