Peppersass is the name of the original cog railway engine that hauls tourists up Mount Washington, highest peak in the Northeastern US, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (my local playground.) Though only 6,288 ft high, Mount Washington is a very long and steep climb, and one of the most dangerous places in the world. Almost as many have died there as on Mt. Everest. Until very recently, the highest recorded windspeed in the world was on Mount Washington (238 mph, as I recall.) One time when I was on the deck of the summit observatory, I grabbed the rail and kicked my feet up. The 90+ mph wind literally allowed me to fly. Anyway, the weather can change from sublime to deadly in a few minutes.
I have mixed feelings about the cog railway. As a climber, I would never use it. When climbing Mount Washington or other peaks on the Presidential range, you often hear the engine's whistle and see thick billows of black smoke coming from the stack. It's not exactly the most environmentally-friendly sight in the world (the summit attractions are owned by the State of New Hampshire, where the motto is "Live Free of Die", or alternately, "Live, Freeze and Die".) But "the cog" is an engineering marvel, has an amazing history (including several gruesome accidents), and has allowed many to see the world from atop a mountain they never would have been able to climb. I do, however, hate it when I reach the summit after hours of painful climbing, only to see ladies in high-heels disembarking from the train. Don't ask me about the Auto Road.
I chose the name Peppersass mostly because it's connected with a passion of mine -- been climbing the Whites for almost 40 years. But it was also because the original engine looked a little like an old-fashioned coffee boiler (it is, after all, a steam engine). Peppersass's funky appearance sort of reminded me of our efforts to tame our equally funky espresso machines. Makes for a cool-looking avatar, too. Also, it wasn't taken!
I see Nicholas hasn't posted about his login name. But even I know where shadowfax comes from. One of my favorite literary names!
