What do you do with your excess coffee grounds?

Postby godlyone on Wed Jan 27, 2010 12:03 am

So some of you have a doserless and grind every little granule into the basket for your espresso, but for most of us we end up with some extra either in the doser or lying on the counter.

So what do you guys do with this perfectly good coffee?

I have a few ideas... either use it for compost if you plant

or save it and use it for drip or french press.

But obviously since the grind is for espresso how can you make a good french press out of it? Less steeping time?

Compost for the garden. My wife says that tomato plants love it.

If I'm quick about it —with a bit of finesse— I can make a small cup by doing fast immersion and filtering through the filter of my Chemex. ~1.6-2 parts (grams) coffee to 1 part (ounces) water with a 40-60 second steep seems to work well with most espresso blends in my rotation.

It's nice to walk away from a brief session with a nice little 4-5oz. cup of 'drip' and minimal mess/waste.

I find that one of those dough scrapers http://www.amazon.com/Danesco-Dough-Scraper-SS-Nylon/dp/B002UQK9AI can be invaluable when it comes to keeping the fiance happy about the lack of grinds everywhere. :D

I have a copper bowl that I use for my spent grounds that end up in the garden. I try and get any stray grounds into this bowl, but the amount is usually tiny since I weigh and use a Kyocera hand grinder for my 14 gram doubles.

Also used in the garden. Coffee grounds are excellent for slug and snail control - something English gardeners tend to obsess about! :D

I use the unused ground coffee for the "Ian sacrificial 1st shot" procedure.

Sink that First Shot

And all left over, and used grounds are going in the garden.

Hey ilya
I just put them down the sink and flush them well with the disposer unit.

Been doing that for nearly a decade.

My drip grounds go into the wastebasket...
