US vs European Fluke meters?

Postby Teme on Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:56 pm

The Fluke 54-II is around $600 retail in Europe and I can get it for half the price from the US (I can pick it up during a business trip). My question is that it appears that there is mention of a noise reduction feature that is at 60Hz in the US and 50 Hz in Europe. My initial thought was that this was due to the different electrical systems -> US vs Europe. However, I am not quite sure what this feature does and cannot quite see this being the point anyway since these things are battery operated. Is there something that I am missing?

In other words, if I buy mine from the US, will it do just as good a job back here in Europe? I will be using my meter for measuring and logging brew (the scace device is already on its way) and roast temperatures.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Anyone? If there is no difference, I'd rather pay the US price, which is about 50% of the local price...

For half the price, I'd risk it. I'll guess that the noise reduction is for industrial equipment in close proximity, but I believe Eric has some contacts at Fluke who would know the technical reason.

Thanks Dan, I'll try and check with Eric and probably take the chance with the US model...

Hi Teme -

The Fluke 54 II, I thought, is around $375 and then you need the FlukeView software ($175) if you want to do any graphing. I would like to talk you into the Omega HH506RA which includes all of this for $175. PM or email me if you need more info or if you can't get a good price on the Omega.

See this:

Let there be no doubt that the Fluke is a fabulous tool but . . .

The 50 or 60 hz filter they are referring to (and I have not come across that verbage) is one that would remove any electrical interference (noise) but I would then question the need for a service tech who works internationally and needs to have different meters for his work stations locations? I'm not speaking of an espresso service tech but rather somebody in power plant troubleshooting or the like.

Hi Eric,

Indeed the price difference between the two is significant. How's the software on the Omega? If it does the job and the usability is acceptable for someone who is not really IT-minded (i.e. me), it sounds like the better option for my wallet (which is fairly thin after my recent acquisitions  ).

Yes, I believe I'm aware of your new "friend" - as I told Dan, this may require a field trip.

The software works - that $175 includes the USB cable whereas $145 just gets you the RS232 cable.

The software and manuals for same are on the Omega FTP site - gotta run - sorry.

You are most welcome whenever you happen to be in my corner of the world :)

Thanks. I'll mull over this info and make my decision next week.

Ok. Thanks for the help. I have an Omega HH506RA, a case, a USB cable and a couple of extra thermocouples on the way.
