www.ptscoffee.com: without the love, it's just coffee

Stuff White People Like - Page 2

To bring this back to the original topic, here's the entry that prompted S. Smith to post about SWPL:

#1 Coffee - Stuff White People Like wrote:There is no doubt that white people love coffee. Yes, it's true that asians like iced coffee and people of all races enjoy it. But I promise you that the first person at your school to drink coffee was a white person. You could kind of tell they didn't enjoy it, but they did it anyways until they liked it - like cigarettes.

White people all need Starbucks, Second Cup or Coffee Bean. They are also fond of saying "you do NOT want to see me before I get my morning coffee." White guys will also call it anything but coffee: "rocket fuel," "java," "joe," "black gold," and so forth. It's pretty garbage all around.

If you want to go for extra points - white people really love FAIR TRADE coffee, because paying the extra $2 means they are making a difference.

Sadly, the comment about garbage is true. I am unaware of the racial demographic for typical coffee drinkers to comment further, other than to add that nobody drank coffee when I was in school, oh so long ago.

Could: "Being overly PC on internet forums" be #150?

Like I said, I saw it on CNN so I thought it would be safe here. Seemed silly and light hearted enough.

Remove it if you like. I don't really care.

Y'all don't need to own a sense of humor to not be jerks, but it can be helpful.
You don't need to appreciate the humor to allow others to appreciate it.
The world doesn't necessarily run parallel to your tastes. Some people don't like the things that you find entertaining. This site, while having an international audience, is US-centric. Made here, mostly (mostly) populated by participants from here. Those that participate from elsewhere need to understand that we are culturally and linguistically different from them, and to make allowances, just as I would if I were to get to an Eastern European site regularly.
Dang, can't a guy just show you something he found funny without having to answer to the PC police *every* time?
Self editing is a sign of maturity, censoring others is ignorance led by narcissism.
Y'all take a deep breath and try to find the humor in all things.
Cheez! You know what they say if you can't take a joke, right?

My take: Well said, Psyd.
Most high order of humor?
Self-deprecation.

See, this is exactly what i meant. I'm being extorted into finding it funny.
I said the humor practised was the same as third-rate comedians.
And then i get comments about political correctness and people thinking i'd like to censor it.
I don't find the site offensive. Not at all. I just don't think it's funny.

The poster assumed no one would take offense. I don't think it is immature or "responding to the PC Police" to challenge the assumption. The poster invited the disclaimers with his presumption. And from my perspective, challenges to maturity, claims of censorship, and character analysis (narcissism), don't really further understanding or dialog.

LMAO - priceless. Don't shoot me, but I noticed the cons run strong from Seattle. I'm surprised as an ex-Seattleite. My avatar should be on the list somewhere too, minus the red stuff (oh gosh - that's soo pun intended). PC'ness is one of the major contributors to 4 of the top 6 causes of death.

Too funny. Obviously you fall into the #18 catgory:

I didn't intend to start a big controversy. Can we get back to coffee?

No one said that you have to agree that it's funny, and it is rather sophomoric. I didn't find it funny either.
I just assumed that you didn't want this kind of thing to not be shown, that's why you would think that we were interested in whether you thought it was funny or not. I apologise if I assumed too much. I'm not sure why we might be interested otherwise, but again, my assumption, possibly wrong, and let me apologise again if I was.

hperry wrote:The poster assumed no one would take offense.

And the OP assumed far less (and more) than what was listed. He assumed that if he thought it was funny (and he did) that he would share it with other like-minded folk and let them have a laugh, too. He also assumed (and hoped) that others on this list were mature enough, and empathetic enough to allow them this little laugh without having to apologise to those with different tastes. And yes, an individual (or group) suggesting that something that doesn't run parallel to his (or their) personal tastes be removed, or not be included in the future, is an attempt at censorship.
In the short run, I'm saying that "I don't like it (understand it, appreciate it)" is a really weak, and lousy reason to suggest that it not be included. "I'm offended", in this country, often means that you aren't doing a really good job at changing what is in front of you of your own accord, and expecting others to do it for you is also selfish.
All I'm saying is that if you find a topic here that isn't to your taste, the polite thing to do is to hit your back button, and look elsewhere.
Unless you're a moderator. And I've seen the moderators work here. They do a great job.
What I'm saying in the long run, is that we all have a little thing in common, and quite a lot of things not in common. If we try to be friendly, accommodating, and helpful to one another, instead of being the same ole internet Keyboard Kommandos, this can be a nice place to hang out and share our hobby. And occasionally share a joke without fear of retribution. Even a bad one, or one that isn't rated exactly G. I might suggest staying away from anything R, but I wouldn't whinge if something showed up.
If you take issue with the hopeful wish that we could all get along and be tolerable, at very least, of one another, I would invite you to continue this in private e-mail. I think that this has gotten far too far afield already.

Agreed, that's why this site doesn't have an "Off Topics" forum. Unless someone has comments/observations that are significantly different from those already posted, I think this is a good point to move onto topics closer to the site's motto, "Your guide to exceptional espresso." :D
