It will be a major focus of our annual meeting in Atlanta this weekend. Don't expect an instant solution, but the process will begin.canuckcoffeeguy wrote:SCAA has released a statement in light of the uproar. Looks like they're rethinking things

As has been said so many times, it's always easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission...

And this is a surprise?Marshall wrote: especially since makers of consumer products have not seen the value in sponsoring the events.
The USBC has been increasingly consumer unfriendly since about 2009. This is the downside of the drive to turn barista-ing into a profession --- the top of a profession isn't chosen in public competition.
The good news is that here now is a new category of profession where this is very possible: the reality show profession: chefs, decoy carvers, models, dress designers, tattoo artists, realtors, and a long list others have competitive reality shows which draw audiences and sponsors. Why not baristas?

Combined with visits to farms growing the featured coffees, "up close and personal" visits to the shop where a competitor works, types of beverages, how-tos, top ten [fill in here], coffee history, etc. I LIKE IT!
It could replace the Kardashians. Of course, a weekly show of my dogs XXX could do that!

There's an international reality show Barista & Farmer, but I've only found short clips to play when I've checked, not really viewer friendly (or I'm missing something)

I received a member email about it on Monday with the following closing paragraph: "It's an ongoing and sometimes challenging process, but we are committed to finding a sustainable way to continue to support the USBC as an important venue for celebrating the craft of coffee preparation. We are eager for your feedback, and communications should be sent to events@scaa.org. We are listening."canuckcoffeeguy wrote:SCAA has released a statement in light of the uproar.
