I got a ridgeless ("LM style") double basket a month or so ago and love it. I now use it almost every time I pull a double. One hidden perk is I can prepare the basket outside of the portafilter - easily rotating it under the doser to get a good distribution (as Dan has recommended on some threads), have the portafilter heating in the group and then slip it into the portafilter at the last second. If I try the same with a ridged basket it clicks into place, which I assume risks causing channeling (it seems like this is more disruptive than tapping with the tamper). I can, of course, pull out the clips to avoid this, but then I often forget that I have done so and knock out the basket as well as the puck when I go to clean up. With the ridgeless this isn't an issue.
I've looked online for a ridgeless single basket, but to no avail. I'm afraid they don't exist or at least are not for sale, but figured unquestionably someone on HB would know. Is there a way to get one?
thanks,
Hugh
