Local news coming to interview me about coffee

Postby kupe on Fri Jul 01, 2011 9:04 am

A friend of mine that I recently introduced to good coffee has been working at a local tv station for a few years. He recommended that this reporter visit me for a piece they're doing on local coffee. I agreed because I thought it might be fun, but I'm not sure it will end up being anything more than a look at a quirky coffee guy and his toys for 15 seconds of air time. I'd like to do better than that, if possible. If given the chance, what would you like to tell people about coffee?

Tell them its not just about a morning caffeine rush, you're into it like a wine connoisseur or a home beer brewer (if you roast yourself). You don't go to Starbucks or McCafe, you go down to your kitchen, warm your machine up, etc. It takes you X number of minutes to get Y number of variables to be correct to be very satisfying, etc. Good luck!

I would also talk about how one really does not need to invest thousands to make fantastic coffee. Mention the $15 Clever Dripper and the Mypressi TWIST, for example.

Man does not live by coffee alone...we need beer too.

First rule is to supply them the background research you would assume they would have done before doing the story. Think of it from their point of view. Which of these two makes the better story: "look at the crazy coffee weirdo we found," or "people world wide making a huge deal about small cups of coffee." If you can supply them the right tidbits, it'll be the latter.

Factoids like high end coffee prices going up five fold, and Japanese paying over $100 per pound at one coffee auction and over $200 at another will help tip the balance. You should also be able to point them to coffee enthusiast cafes in the area and sites on the web.

Those are some excellent suggestions. Thank you. I'm glad I asked.

Well, here we go. Perhaps not as eloquent (Or accurate) as I would have liked to be, but it turned out to be a pretty nice light-hearted look at the home coffee geek.

Thanks! I'm a little disappointed that they only showed the green and super oily beans (Actually some Caffe D'arte) and not the third lighter roasted sample I had out as well.

*Edit: Oh, they did show them for a few seconds.
