Is US Olympia Express distributor out of business?

Postby tekomino on Fri Dec 03, 2010 10:20 am

Seems like swisscoffeeproducts.com, US distributor for Maximatic and Cremina is no longer, unless they have problems with hosting. Anybody know anything?

I thought that they might go out of business due to very high prices imposed on both products resulting in low volume (30-45 machines a year total sold by my estimates)...

If it is true, I am sad to see them go, but perhaps Olympia comes back with more reasonable pricing. Maximatic should be in $1500-$2000 range at the most and Cremina at $1500...

They evidently allowed the domain to expire? It must be a recent development since this cached page is dated November 27, 2010. Sorry, I don't have any further information.

The domain registration -- through their web site designer/host -- is good until February. Last updated Dec 2. Maybe they stopped paying?

I tried to order a few items from swisscoffeeproducts about two weeks ago and got the following response.

Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in answering.
Unfortunately, we are closing our business and have to cancel all orders.
We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Robert and Katherine

It's unfortunate, but there can't have been a huge market for $3500 Creminas.

What a pity! The more I use my post 2002 Cremina the more impressed I am - and I was pretty impressed to start.

An opening for someone there, maybe....

At the current prices I don't think there is a market. Why? You get Elektra Semiautomatic for almost half the price of Maximatic. Bezzera BZ07 with PID for perhaps even less. It is no brainer. Maximatic has no chance.

You get Europiccola, Elektra Leva or Ponte Vecchio for perhaps third of a price of Cremina. Cremina does not make 3 times better or more consistent espresso than those. I know, I tried them, I have them...

At home setting all these machines will last long time with normal maintenance. So why would you want to pay 2-3 times more for Olympia name? It turns out there are some of us crazy enough (good thing I got out of it in timely manner) but most people are simply, correctly I might add, balking at the high price and that is clearly reflected in low sales for Olympia machines and inability to keep US distribution profitable...

They are good machines, but they priced themselves out of market...

They were failing years ago then got a a new owner and fresh injection of cash but it sounds like the fat lady has sung. Shame. They were expensive machines, no doubt about it but having had one for a while to test I can say they were the best built machine I have ever seen. No cast parts, everything was machined and over designed/built. If 3 screws would work they would use 4 bolts. The internals were just as artfully crafted as the espresso it produced. In an embattled economy, there will be casualties.

Hopefully a few machines were bought to feed the future used market. I'm sure they had a tough go with the limited and high priced line. Would be nice to see a larger distributor add the Olympia line to keep the option open.

Oh man what a drag. Sorry they didn't make it. I bought a few replacement parts things from them for my Cremina 2002, and had talked to them a few times. They seemed really into the Creminas.

I was going to send them the grouphead of another 2002 that that needs rebuilding. The Cremina factory does not make the original 2002 fancy styled gaskets anymore, and they recommend having the groupheads sent back to be machined to fit the newest gasket style. I guess I'll have to send the grouphead all the way to Switzerland to get fixed. I also wanted to pick up the Olympia Express cups they sold. I don't see them on the Olympia site but maybe I am missing them.

:(

I agree they are expensive machines, and in this economy it must be tough to sell a lot of them.
