I know that adding "NOT ONE of my friends" is intended to add indisputable weight to your personal preferences, but it should be noted that there are large numbers of coffee aficionados in the L.A. area who are delighted with the espresso being served in the "recently opened" shops. I regularly drive (or walk) miles out of my way to have a shot from Intelligentsia, Groundwork (2nd and Main) and Caffe Luxxe.
