How to extend the fun without becoming overcaffeinated?

Postby Firepile on Fri Jul 15, 2011 11:34 am

Picture the scene: It is a normal Sunday morning in the Peak District, beautiful but damp. Mrs Firepile is fast asleep so 1st born and I enjoy our cereals before getting on with the latest Lego project.

Once the Gaggia has heated up I have my two cappuccinos and that's it, the coffee fun is over for the day. :(

So how do I stretch my coffee time out? I feel like two doubles is my limit. Should I switch to decaffeinated at that point or is there anything else to suggest, beyond getting a sense of perspective?

Decaf would definitely be a good option to extend the ritual if you want to spend more time enjoying coffee. I've had some great decaf espresso, but I think your biggest issue may be finding a good supplier of fresh decaf coffee in the Peak District.

On an aside I do miss camping and walking, heck even driving through the Peak District.
It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science.

And don't forget the cycling! Only been here two years and sometimes it still feels like a holiday.

Good tea and good tea shops are in plentiful supply hereabouts, but good coffee is harder to find. My last lot was from Square Mile Coffee which was really good, so I think I will give their decaf blend a go. Thanks

I have extended the fun with habituation. I drink caffeine up to 9pm.

I wish I could find a decaf I liked.

Decaf is a gift from the gods for those folk who do not like the caffeine jag, but love the taste of coffee. Talk to your local roaster about a decent decaff espresso alternative. It's like the journey of discovery of espresso starting all over again, but you know now what you'd wished you knew then.

SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK AND SICKLY!

Decaf. I've tried it; haven't really found any that agrees with my tastes.
I typically make a drip pot at home, then a couple of espressos at the office each for my and my office-mate.
You could make espressos for other people....heck, half the fun in cooking (extending to coffee) is cooking for others, and sharing in their enjoyment.

I am never really satisfied when pulling shots with decaf. All the usual visual indicators of shot quality are gone, it blondes almost from the start of the shot, and it basically feels like using really stale coffee.

To the OP, why not spread your drinks throughout the day? If you want to geek out with tasting session pulling a bunch of shots, just spit them out after tasting as you try different profiles and such.

Thanks Chris, its a good point. Although being a dyed in the wool Yorkshire-man, my whole being is shouting, "Spit? Make a drink and chuck it away!" Even thinking about such waste gives me palpitations, or is that the caffeine...

But you have made me think. I need to invite some friends around for a morning tasting session. I can make as many coffees as I like (no waste), bake some biscuits and some bread, it sounds perfect. Everyone wins apart from the Lego project. In fact, why didn't I think of this before?

But why can't the Lego project win too?
