Two big questions are going begging: How do you experience "overcaffeination?" What are the negative consequences of one double too many?
No comment or speculation on any individual's actual sensitivity to caffeine. But, let's remember that a typical single shot of espresso (30ml by volume) only has about 1/3 the caffeine of a 6 oz cup of "regular" supermarket/diner coffee. That means, three doubles have the the same amount of crank as (let me get my calculator) two regular cups.
If you believe your caffeine limit on espresso is 2 doubles, your limit for ordinary joe is only 8oz. Again, no judgement made or implied, but that's rather a low tolerance for someone with any tolerance at all. It could mean you're developing an increasing sensitivity to caffeine and should consider avoiding it altogether. Or, it could mean a bunch of other things.
Decaf has its charms, no doubt. And hey! What are you going to do if that's all your body will allow? But in the greater scheme of espresso decaf is something of a blow-up sex doll. Harmless, and inadequate.
Just sayin' is all,
