How Many Espressos Per Day? - Page 4

Postby peacecup on Mon Apr 26, 2010 2:46 pm

3-4 lever-pulled doppios per day, 5 on occasion. These typically consist of 15-16g, extracted ristretto to around 30ml.

I calculated the actual amount of solids extracted on my Caravel by weighing the puck before extraction and after air-drying for several weeks. I think it was around 3g (I need to look on the Caravel thread to be sure). Anyway, Illy gives the caffeine content on the can as about 1% - that should be about 30 mg caffeine per shot the way I prepare. I can drink one of these after dinner and still fall asleep.

I do notice that if I drink pump-extracted espresso instead of lever espresso it tends to keep me awake.

:)
It's the pump effect for sure, not the coffee :D
I can (and quite often do) drink a shot (be it any kind straight shot) after supper and then go to sleep and sleep very well.

During the week Im lucky to get 1 double in. I have to wake up, turn the machine on and then jump in the shower. Once Im done getting ready I pull one shot and enjoy before leaving to work. I dont drink after work otherwise I am up till 2am. Weekends I am able to get 2-3 doubles in one day

Usually one double in the morning, sometimes followed by a ristretto macchiato. Then a double when I get home from work. If I'm in a wicked caffeine mood, I'll try for another macchiato, but not often.

Recently I've been trying to cut back on caffeine to help me feel more centered. I've also increased exercise and plan to re-introduce a meditation / yoga into my weekly routine.

I cut my morning commute coffee down to 200 ml from 350 ml. I've reduced the number of espressos that I make at work with my Twist. I used to like to make two ~18 g doubles in the afternoon but now I'll skip it entirely or just make one. I also don't always have coffee or espresso at home after returning from work.

This has been a challenge lately as I had two separate home-roasters send me coffee to sample. Earlier in the week, I had my morning cup, some espresso at work, then coffee and espresso at home and had a little trouble sleeping. I'm always tempted to pull more then a couple shots in any one session to dial in the coffee and taste across the range. Sometimes I'll pull singles to reduce the hit, sometimes even with the lever extraction it'll keep me up. Saturday or Sunday mornings can be a wonderful time to pull leisurely shots while making breakfast and relaxing.

I guess my target consumption these days is 200 ml pour-over coffee and up to two doubles per day. I'm planning three singles tonight.

I am drinking 10 a day,
Trying to take my pain away,
Shelling out all my greens,
So I can buy couple of beans.

Some are brewing very good,
That's all on up and up,
But here comes the uppercut,
Prices only going up.

Better learn to roast them,
But mostly I compost them,
Still drink 10 a day,
Even if they take my house away.
