Holiday Wish List Gifts 2008 - Thanks Sponsors and HB

Postby ddr on Mon Dec 08, 2008 2:11 pm

How about six post winners :)

I read through a few of the messages in this thread before I won anything, and I can understand that people feel slighted when a new person happens to find out about a contest and walks away with a prize. I have to say that I feel that I am very lucky to have won a great gift from PT's Coffee. (I almost said unworthy instead of lucky in that last sentence, but I did not want to have a bunch of more worthy people sending me their address so that I can send them the prize!)

Anyway, what I wanted to do in this post is:

1) Introduce myself: My name is Dan, and I live in Seattle. I write technical training material for service providers (telephone companies, etc.) who use the software written by the company I work for. I travel a bit back and forth between Seattle and the rest of the world working with developers and training other trainers, and I will be moving to Chicago (so the messages above about the winter are especially welcome) in 2009.

2) Say thanks to Dan and the members of HB: Thanks all, I really appreciate the willingness you show to help new people, like myself, get into this hobby. I hope that I can also be helpful in the future.

3) Thank PT's and all the other sponsors of the site and contest: I won the Baratza Vario grinder and a monthly shipment of beans from PT's. I will post more information after I unpack the gift. For now I would like to say thank you again to PT's for the great gift to me, but more importantly thanks for sponsoring the website and contest. To all of the other sponsors I would like to say thank you also; like many others I start my day reading home-barista.com and without your support I would probably not be able to do this. I base my buying decisions on what I read here, and I recommend to others that they do the same.

Take Care, and Happy Holidays,
Dan R.

Thanks Dan for your introduction and the thank you. I split your post from the "ONE POST WINNERS?" thread for the benefit of the sponsors who really appreciate the feedback (for historical interest, here's similar threads from 2006 and 2007). As I mentioned in my e-mail to you, you're one LUCKY guy. A Baratza Vario grinder and a pound of coffee each month for a year, wow! Jeff and Bryan really pulled out the stops this year, as did many of the other sponsors. That's no small gesture in these rough economic times.

On that note, I would like to express my appreciation to all the sponsors. They make projects that expand our knowledge of espresso like the Titan Grinder Project possible and support reviews that inform us about high-end gear like the La Spaziale Vivaldi II. I don't know how much coffee we went through this year, other than "a lot." The coffee roaster sponsors cheerfully kept the test grinders whirling with great coffees. Thanks again!

I would like to offer special thanks to Jim Piccinich of 1st-line equipment. Truth be told, I very reluctantly considered this year's return of the contest. It consumes an inordinate amount of time for coding, testing, organizing, managing the entries, and processing the awards. Normally I start preparing in early November, but this year Thanksgiving was a week away and I hadn't even e-mailed the sponsors. Before officially canceling the event, I sent out a note to a few of the long-time sponsors to gauge their interest. It was Jim who said "Don't cancel, it's an HB tradition!" I don't know if three years running qualifies as a tradition, but to pique my interest, he offered to sponsor the choice of an Ascaso Steel Duo Professional espresso machine or Mazzer Mini Electronic grinder! These retail for $999, more than double the value of 1st-line's contribution last year and a new all-time high for prizes on HB. With that offer, I could not say no. Fortunately the sponsors responded quickly and it all came together in time for the Friday after Thanksgiving. Thanks Jim for the extra push!

Finally, I will close with the classic thank you post from one of last year's winners:

Shotsurfer wrote:A Visit From HB and the Site Sponsors

'Twas a month before the Holidays, when all across the land,
Home Baristas all gathered, with their open hands;
Their cups were placed by their machines with care,
In hopes that HB and the SPONSORS soon would be there;
The baristas were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of grinders danced in their heads;
And I at my desk, watching my husband nap,
had just settled down for a nice cuppa cap.

When out on the Web there arose such a clatter
I sprang to the HB website to see what was the matter.
Away to the HB window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the thread, I could reply in a dash.

The moon on my screen set the Wish List aglow,
Like the luster of crema, generosity was bestowed,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Surprises, Delights, and Gifts! Oh my dear!

With HB's trusty leader, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Dan, AKA St. Nick,
More rapid than eagles the Sponsors they came,
And he laid out the rules, and wrote them by name:

"Now, 1st-Line! now, Chris's! now, Counter Culture, join in the mission!
On, Ecco Caffe! on Espresso Parts! on, Great Infusions, what a vision,
From Intelligentsia, Klatch Roasting, and Olympia Coffee, windfalls!
Now Paradise, PT's Coffee, and Vaneli's, giving away all!

And then in a twinkling, the games did begin!
The baristas were eager, all hoping to win!
As I drew in my hand, and put the final click on my mouse,
PT's Coffee came through with a Gift for my house!

The Maestro -- how it twinkled! The coffee how merry!
My cheeks were like roses, my full heart like a cherry!
To the team at PT's Coffee, It was great to meet ya!
Thank You! Thank You! For a year of the luscious Bella Vita!

When the coffee arrived, I went straight to my work,
Pulled down on the lever with nary a jerk;
The crema it poured the thickness of honey,
I will still savor this coffee, when I have to pay money!

Upon the first sip, I tasted chocolates and fruit,
A very nice texture and Crema to boot!
Baristas enjoy a coffee of this ilk;
It is definitely a classic, and pairs nicely with milk.

The baristas are all cheering and giving a whistle,
Replies are still flying like virtual missiles,
But I heard them exclaim, as the end is in sight,
"HAPPY HOLIDAYS HB AND SITE SPONSORS, THANKS FOR THE SURPRISES, GIFTS, AND DELIGHTS!"

I'd like to add my thanks for all the hard work that Dan has put in to HB and this contest over the years. It can be a silent, thankless job sometimes but it does not go unnoticed by most of the members here I assure you. A special thanks for all you do Dan! Thanks also to the generous sponsors that allow the contest to survive with the donations of GREAT products to be sure! I'd also add my thanks to Jim at 1st-line Equipment as I made my first NEW espresso machine and grinder purchase with the help of Diane, along time ago. Miss Silvia and the Macap have both found new digs but all the folks at 1st-Line were very helpful then and now for anybody looking for advice. I'd also like to pass along thanks to Nathan at Counter Culture Coffee as you should be looking for my next order soon. HO! HO! HO!

How do you thank a site that, on the one hand, has "made" me spend waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too much money, and on the other, has brought me such a wealth of information, support, and knowledge?

Thank you, Dan, for everything that you do to make this site as complete and thorough as it is. Image

Thank you to ALL the sponsors -- not only those of you who participate in the Holiday Contest, but all of you who helps this site function and survive throughout the year -- though your sponsorship, sure, but also through your active participation as posters on this site! Your information is invaluable, and I know that I am not alone in benefitting from it. I look forward to your continuing participation, and you may look forward to my continued (and satisfied) patronage. Image

And thank you to all the participants on this site, my "extended coffee family" who have helped me so much over the past year(s). And thank you in advance for all of your help, encouragement, friendship and information that I shall no doubt benefit from in the year ahead . . . . Image

Cheers to all,
Jason

Sweet! I didn't win one of the gigantic prizes, but I got a Holiday Delight from Counter Culture Coffee today!

I'm getting ready to move to North Carolina, so I've been ordering my coffee from Counter Culture for the past couple of months and I've been VERY happy with the quality. I've talked on the phone a couple of times with Nathan and the customer service has been outstanding!

I'm psyched to get a buy-one-get-one-free from CCC and really appreciate their participation in this really cool contest.

Thank you Dan and Counter Culture and all of the sponsors!

A very large Thank You to Jim and all the folks at 1st-Line Equipment for the Mazzer mini that I won in the Holiday gifts. I can now toss out my whirly blade... no loss there.

Also my appreciation to Dan for running this yearly event.

The vendors and forum members have helped to change and enlarge the espresso community for the better.
And Dan has been the ring leader in this effort.

My thanks again,
Peter Lee

I can only echo everyone above. Though I haven't won any large prizes I have had fun trying. I am looking forward to this continuing tradition for years to come.

Dan, great work!!

Let me add my thanks to Dan for his relentless efforts and energy not just for the Holiday Wish List, but for HB year 'round. And thanks to chriscoffee.com for the Holiday Surprise. It's been a bit of a down year for me personally so it was nice to get a win at year's end, and from a sponsor right here at home in the Hudson Valley to boot! Muchas gracias and feliz navidad.
All the coffee in Ethiopia won't make me a morning person.

Excellent, I'd just been thinking about starting a thank you thread, too. Thanks to Dan for running the contest and the sponsors for giving us something to hope for - it was fun!

Thanks to Dan, the HB team and members, and to the sponsors. I really enjoy HB and have gotten a lot of useful information - when I'm stuck and feel I've run out of things to try, I read (or re-read) a post or thread, and make a little progress. As for the sponsors, I do most of my general shopping on line and have done business with quite a few from the list; the high quality of product, dedication, and service they provide is rare. I also have a lot of fun with the contest, I hope you'll be able to pull it off again. I appreciate the generosity of all involved.

Thanks.
