My experiences mirror Dan's. And until there's some valid scientific evidence that my coffee/espresso/caffeine intake is harmful I have no plans to quit.

Since I stopped drinking coffee regularly, I have had 2 ounces of coffee in a grocery store where some of the coffee is supposedly roasted. It tasted very good, but the next afternoon I had my usual withdrawal headache (obviously, I can't be sure of a causal relation). Three weeks later, I made a 4 cup french press and drank it, enjoyed it, and had no withdrawal problems. Just an update.

Um, what happens if you are like me and drink about a dozen espresso/coffee equivalents a day and you stop all of a sudden?

Well, sometimes we go on little vacation camping trips with just some herbal tea at most. So far no headaches or ill effects at all.

But, maybe I am just not paying attention. I will have to start keeping a lookout for a mild headache or something from now on.

Amazing. I'd take some no-doze or something along...

I generally agree with many of these posts in that I dont really get too many symptoms if I have to go without for a day or two. I am of the same opininon of an earlier post in that I dont drink alot of coffee but what I do drink is of high quality. If for some reason when I travel I think I miss the routine more than the coffee itself. Dont get me wrong my spros and caps are great but doing it is also part of the fun.

Some people drink coffee for pharmaceutical reasons.

Others drink it for social reasons.

And then there are some who drink it for sensory reasons.

If you're the first kind of person - when you stop drinking coffee you experience the same sort of symptoms you would when quitting any drug.

If you're the second kind of person - you become lonely and withdrawn.

If you're the third kind of person - you move on to something new to experience.

The most I've experienced with brief withdrawals (vacations) is a headache for a few minutes (though I wouldn't call myself too addicted... I think). If you're quitting caffeine, just be careful not to cancel your son's birthday party (see table).

Chris, that is a compelling hypothesis, and might explain some unusual phenomena, but do you really have much evidence to support it?

Personally if I don't drink coffee but continue my regular daily routine (or something similar), I will feel like crap. However, a couple times I haven't had coffee because I was hiking, and have experienced no withdrawal symptoms.

I find it telling that the soft drink users are having issues, and the coffee drinkers are not, until you get to the heavyweights, like over a thousand Mg a day. It seems that the first sets of coffee vs soft drink might be suffering from sugar withdrawals, *not* caffeine, and the really heavy caffeine users might be suffering from other things as well.

With my coffee consumption almost never more than only one or two doubles on most (but not all) weekend mornings, each shot still produces a buzz - the absence of coffee the rest of the week (or on those weekend mornings when we don't fire up the Tin Man) produces no noticeable ill effects... At the expense of sounding like Ben Franklin (or was it Socrates?), "Everything in moderation..."
