Has Bean vs Sweet Maria's?

Postby coffee.me on Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:09 am

I've been buying my greens from SM's for years and I'm satisfied mostly because:

  • Greens Quality: Taste is almost always loud and clear, it shows the beans were never mishandled, miss graded or miss advertised as high grade. I can't recall ever getting an old crop, a stinky batch, high % of broken/quakers or the like. SM's seems to care for the beans they sell very well.
  • Greens Descriptions: They're elaborate but not too romantic. I find the intensity description (bold/mild/mid) pretty accurate and many times he explains what he found on different roast levels. I kind of "get" Tom's descriptions now. Yes, they are a bit too loud sometimes, but in a manageable way; that is, I can attribute them to Tom's palate excellence and my lack of one.
  • Business Practice: Never had an order delayed/mixed or the like, they take my money and promptly send me what I ordered. When I receive it, it's all there and it's all like what was in my online shopping cart.

Has Bean seems to be popular in Europe, any comments on how they compare to Sweet Maria's? Especially on the points I mention above?

I don't know how they compare to SM, but you don't have anything to worry about with the green quality, or the business practices of HB. How the descriptions work for you I doubt anyone can answer but you, but the full cupping scores are on the site, and you can see what others have to say on the ones that have been part of In My Mug.

Thanks but comparison to SM's here is key as I need a solid point of reference. I doubt there are many people who tried beans from both shops, but even a few people commenting with comparison notes would be excellent.
