Do you drink more or less now that you've gone over to the dark side?

I have noticed that since I got into "specialty coffee" I am drinking much less coffee. Far better coffee, obviously, but not nearly in as large quantities. I used to drink at least two full pots of auto-drip a day. Now I might drink a couple of doubles and at the most three cups of AP/FP/Clever/Chemex. It seems a little counter intuitive; one would think that the more one became obsessed, the more one would drink. It's probably more of a quality over quantity thing.

Anyone else notice the same thing? Do you drink more or less now than before you "got into" coffee?

I definitely drink less. About two cappuccinos a day. Before it was half a liter of brewed coffee a day. Now much better taste and enjoyment.

I decidedly drink less brewed coffee now then I did before since I now brew coffee for immediate consumption instead of into a carafe to hold and drink over a longer period. The cup size is smaller too, about 200 ml (6.7 oz) instead of about 12 oz cups.

Saturday was an exception where I brewed a full 8 cup Yama vac pot and put it in a thermos and drank it throughout the day. One large cup while dropping my daughter off, another large cup when I got back, and a third large cup when I went out again for another errand. Normally my wife would help me out, but she's been ill so she's not drinking any coffee.

As for espresso, my consumption of straight shots of espresso has gone from near zero to probably about ten doubles at home during the week (centered around the weekend).

Since joining the dark side, as you say, I do drink quite a bit less coffee than before. Usually a 12 oz cup brewed through a Chemex in the morning and a double first thing when I get home. Before I would have 20 oz of auto-drip during my commute in to work, a few 10 oz. cups of office sludge during the day, and another 12 oz at home. Now, I'm much less caffeinated but I'm actually enjoying my coffee. Life is much better these days.

Up to 2.5 years ago I drank a cup of coffee once or twice a YEAR & usually regretted it. Since discovering that coffee can actually taste good my consumption is way up. My wife & I start the day with homeroasted S/O brewed in the vac pot, then I have my morning latte followed by 2-4 straight doubles throughout the day. If it wasn't for caffeine & my dislike of decaf I'd be drinking twice as much.

I went from almost no coffee consumption to daily coffee consumption. Let's say there are at least two angles from which people might approach specialty coffee. I came from the "coffee is undrinkable, it must be fixed" camp, whereas others may come from the "coffee is a daily habit, so why not have the best" camp.

It's interesting to introduce good coffee to friends that come from one side or the other. The hardcore drinkers tend to like heavy-bodied coffees like Sumatra and brew methods like French Press. For people who have previously found coffee to be harsh and bitter, I like to introduce them to really clean cups like a Yirgacheffe brewed through a paper filter.

HI Kristian...
Drip in the morning and espresso later in the day...

Same amount just rearranged the schedule.

Less is more in my case. More quality as the OP stated.

I used to drink throughout the day at work - getting drip coffee from the communal coffee pot at the break room.

Now I cringe or will only drink coffee from the break room in extreme circumstances.
Now I drink 1 espresso, then make 1 cappuccino to drink while on the way to work.
Somehow I no don't drink any more coffee after that. I can't quite bring my Oscar at work but even if I did I don't think I'd make any more after my morning fix. If I want something hot to drink at work, I tend to drink tea.

My coffee drinking has reduced substantially since I have obtained good machines and grinders. I enjoy it more and no longer drink two pots of pourover by noon! Simple home roasting helps me to have a coffee that I like available at low cost and in small enough amounts that it is always rested and doesn't stale.

Hi guys,

I used to drink more at the start of the hobby, but now I'm limited to a mug (drip) in the morning, 2 mugs at work from a thermal flask (not superb but better than the auto machine sh*t) and usually that's it. I used to drink one/two doubles in the evening as well, but when I'm busy after work and forget to turn on the machine it's usually too late for me to drink anything more. I've also cut down on milk drinks and now I almost only drink pure espresso or drip, which is a big change as I used to drink mostly cappas.

Regards,
dsc.
