Most people freak out when they see all the equipment I have and how big it is

Seriously, they do. They joke about my opening a cafe at my house, and yes I'm building a coffee bar in the basement. They think I'm over the top, and then like was previously posted, I remind them it's a hobby and that people spend lots of time and money on photography, cars, audio equipment, RC cars/planes, woodworking equipment, hunting equipment, wine (whatever THEY are into) and they start to get it.

My wife has said that what most people find strange is that I taste nuances in the coffee. With that said she can't drink coffee at many places anymore because of my obsession. I occasionally take coffee into work and when I do it disappears much quicker than usual. A few people there are beginning to "get it" and actually engage in conversation with me about it. Slowly they are being turned from the dark (roasted) side.

Really great quote!

I have noticed on a few occasions that once someone "gets it" that coffee is my hobby and they see how passionate I am about it, they will kind of have a moment of inward reflection, like- "hmmm, what is my hobby? Wish I had one!"

I'm not sure understand would happen unless they happen to share the same passion. To some extent the reaction corresponds to the person's degree of liking coffee. On the far (nether) end of the scale are tea-drinkers, and strictly-beer guys, to whom the whole espresso thing is a blur anyway. If they are somewhat fond of me, they respect my oddities. And to some extent they usually enjoy profiting from this particular obsession: if the shot's really good, I gotta share.

You would think that the results would speak for themselves, but there is no predicting who will notice the coffee and who will not. At a party, some people who loooove their $Bux will drink the capp I make them down and barely mention the latte art. Then the odd person that I did not even know was a fan of coffee will be shocked by what I serve them, telling me it is the best coffee they have ever tasted. My cleaning lady is perhaps my biggest fan. I make her a coffee every time she comes over, and she tells me every time it is the best coffee in the world (which, like most of you as well, is exactly what we are aspiring to).

It seems that mediocrity has championed coffee, to the point where people drink it without even thinking that it could be something more. I just cannot predict who will notice that the stuff in their cup is the real thing, and who will just accept that it is coffee, and drink it with all the customary expectations they have grown to have.

I think this goes for almost everything, isn't it? I mean: it's in the word "mediocrity". It is only when people start to care about things that they start to excel, and eventually they can even become loners. When you are really into things, you leave the "Big Crowd" behind, do you?

It is an enigma for me, the poor taste that people have sometime. But then again, I guess some people will think the same of me on other subjects... :D
