Not really the craziest %#*$ing thing I've seen all day, but I didn't really know where to put this. I was walking through a new department store that's recently opened up here, and I saw Pete Licata (a USBC champ and a WBC finalist) doing some pour-over brewing. I had passed by the coffee shop on my last visit but didn't order anything because they didn't have the roast date stamped on the bags and it was a bit pricey (it is Hawaiian Kona in an over-priced department store, after all), but I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a chat. I was surprised to hear that he'd been to Taiwan several times in the last couple of months. It's not every day I get an opportunity to talk about coffee with someone like that, and he was quite friendly.

I'd be surprised if it's not a Kona he's familiar with. I doubt he'd be there representing Hawaii, his native state and not be offering top shelf coffee. You're lucky, I tried to line up a meeting with him on my trip to Maui last November, but he was gone on one of his frequent world tours. I did get to meet Alejandro Mendez the WBC champ though, in El Salvador.

FEAR THE BEARD! Barista Mag did a great article about him and Kona/Kai coffee last issue.

Nope. A new one called Top City. The kind of place I can only go to look. He was doing some demoing for his boss in Hawaii, so I assume they either own or supply the beans for that coffee shop.
