The craziest %#*$ing thing I've seen all day... - Page 61

I thought I'd finally managed to find a cheap commercial lever machine on CL. Astoria AL1, hooray :D

It looks so... barren.

I'm checking out the photos as I go to e-mail the seller. Hrm... something isn't not right here... where's the group head? Is it... removed? Missing? Nope, it's a "steamer machine" being sold as an espresso machine. Damn it! :x

Damn, I had thought I'd be the first :D Guess I'm not fast enough. A slightly more detailed desciption is provided here. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/...-lane.html

And yes, it will run off spent pucks as the article is stating they "will use waste coffee grounds, collected from a branch of Costa Coffee, to power their vehicle"

You'll need a few though, 56 espressos to the mile

And the British Government is puzzling out how to tax them for it
It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science.

This morning I was dropping the dog off for a bath after the many rainy days in Montreal and I had a coffee near the groomers.
Saw this on the table.

Must have been invented by a Behmor owner with low voltage in the house roasting in the garage in the winter. But I am curious to know if anyone has tasted this.

I guess it's not even taken to the first crack. Reading around, it supposedly tastes nutty, but not much like actual coffee. Lots of references on Barista Exchange, nothing positive. "It tasted like grassy cheese puffs." Also, lots of warnings not to grind it in any grinder you care about, because the beans are so hard.

Oh yeah, you can make a 4-stroke engine run on just about anything, vegetable oil, compost, even herbs - Mussolini made the trains run on thyme.

Everything that I've read about it is getting all of the caffeine out of the bean, and that it tastes somewhere between 'crappy' and 'it doesn't suck too bad'.
I'm not here for the caffeine. If this were in the pursuit of caffeine, I'd be buying diet pills. I'm here for the taste of coffee (as well as the feel and the texture, etc.).
If I ever find a wonderful de-caf* I can source locally, that's going to end up being sixty percent of my espresso consumption.

*Presently, all I can get my hands on are decent, but nearly unremarkable. Not bad, but I want something that stands up and dances...

I looked into White Coffee a while ago after reading a reference to it on CoffeeGeek here and apparently it has a small following not only for the increased caffeine but also for the taste. I do believe that you need a special grinder or otherwise need to be careful not to damage your existing grinder on these beans.

I also learned from Wikipedia that in Malaysia, Ipoh White Coffee refers to roasting it in just margarine instead of margarine and sugar resulting in a lighter looking roasted bean.

I haven't had the opportunity to try any form of White Coffee.
