I think the cause matters because the climate change crowd has been playing the blame and guilt game, and some have been lining their pockets with millions of dollars as a result. The argument has been "man made" global warming, and now there's strong evidence the data was manipulated or made up to support the argument. Now that some of the misdeeds have been uncovered, the climate change crowd has changed their arguments in an attempt to keep the spotlight away from their shenanigans.
"Climate change" is rather nebulous and can mean many different things, which I think is what they want. It's hard to argue with such a vague term. Call me a wacko, or whatever, but I think the effects of man on climate is much smaller than the effects of man as related to natural oceanic resources and pollution.
I believe people/nations would be more inclined to fight a man-made problem as opposed to a large-scale naturally occurring phenomenon, because it's easier and there's a sense of responsibility.
