Coffee and espresso on the road - Page 2

I use a JetBoil stove with the french press attachment, paired with an old Leinbrock hand grinder. It's small and quick, but I've only used it for car travel. I imagine the stove and fuel would raise a few flags during air travel.

I just picked up another cheap Gaggia and am planning to hack it apart and build a small travel machine, although it's at the back end of a long list of other projects. Someday.

If traveling by car I bring my Capresso Infinity, coffee, filters, Melitta or Swissgold Pourover and if no hot water will be available I'll bring a little Bodum Mini Ibis water boiler.

If traveling by plane I bring my little backpacking hand-crank burr grinder.

for backpacking i bring an aeropress or mocha and turkish grinder. for hotel travel i like my velox. about the size of a mocha pot, all told and makes a coffee that is quite similar to mokha pot taste. best with french roast. i find the hotel machines don't even boil water well.

Those machines are suitable only for tea, and just barely that.

I do bring a bit of tea along, but there was one instance where this five star, historically importatnt NE hotel just couldn't manage tea. I imagined that there would be a normal coffee service in the room, but I was mistaken. I asked for one to be sent up, couldn't happen. There was literally no place that I could get one within bicycling distance during any of the hours that I was not working, so I had to satisfy myself with room service. Hey, I tried. They arrived at my door with cold cups and a tepid pot of water, and the tea still in it's wrapper. Fifteen minutes after I called. I suggested that heat is an important part of the tea making process, and asked if he'd be willing to go back to the kitchen, heat up the water, and just after it boiled, put it back in the pot with the teabags. And if I tipped well, could he pour some into the cup to warm it, as well?
Twenty minutes later, another guy shows up with the same cold cup, tepid water, and tea still in the bags.
Oh, and to top it all off, the site that I was working at had very high security, so they had a Starbucks installed on property. And it was bad, even by the 'Buck's low standards...
I kept thinking I'd wake up in a plush hotel bed, cover in sweat and sweet relief, but it was real.
Last time I traveled without kit.
