Just amazing that someone had the tenacity to hand drill a portafilter. Are you going to polish it up?
I am not sure whether I should polish it. The patina speaks to its age. I have written to ask Lucio's advice. The argument for polishing is to brew with it. Janet will have a vote too, and I'm not sure what she would like.

I will clean it up and just ordered some 2mm buna rubber o-ring cord to make gaskets for the boiler cap and portafilter. After cutting it to length, the ends will be joined with superglue, something Alan Adler taught me. This is the same method I use to fit gaskets on vintage La Pavoni steam valve shafts where the knob can't be removed.

You might try Teflon faucet packing rope, Gary - I've used it for many years in all sorts of devices. It seals to itself, so no joining or bonding is necessary. You can get it in several diameters - it's really versatile stuff.

Thanks, everyone. I've started a restoration thread here.

Restoring Rare Vesuviana Caffetiere

Apparently the Vesuviana is the first caffetiere to use the method adopted soon after that in the Atomic coffee maker of Robbiati. I've added links to the history of this machine at the end of this post of the thread above.

A friend checked this book out for me from the UC Davis library. Got to read it for free!

The digital copy made its rounds last year. Probably the best book on roasting I've ever seen.

Took a quick walk through the goodwill store this morning. I was very surprised to find a Behmor on the shelf for $60.00. Looks like it may have been used once. There is just a little bit of chaff on the inside, but it is incredibly clean.

Damn, I never find anything like that! Maybe a 10 yr old toaster oven though.
