A barista with profound responsibilities

In some places a barista's cultural role is far ranging. From the L.A. Times Baghdad bureau: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-iraq-coffee-20110704,0,709469.story.

And then there's coffee that's too meaningful for comfort.

I find this story terribly sad. If even the coffee has been recruited to carry the symbolic freight of people's martial and familial affairs, if every scent, color, flower, and taste is turned into a reminder of some obligation, what escape is there? How can they ever get outside themselves?
