UPDATED 05/10/09: See next post for finalists!

When terrakeramik.com joined the HB sponsors, they mentioned that they were the exclusive importer of TORR tampers. It's no secret that I love to collect "barista jewelry" and the fine tampers by TORR are among my favorites (er, is five too many?). To showcase their offerings and given members a chance to showoff their barista bling, Lisa Meier at terrakermik.com agreed to sponsor a photo contest. The rules are simple:

  • Each member can post up to two photos with the theme "barista bling"
  • Team HB will select four semi-finalists and a poll will determine the winner.
The winner gets their choice of a TORR Zebra Wood tamper or two Terra Keramik cups (e.g., one demitasse and one cappuccino cup). You may recognize these cups from competition since they're favored by numerous top competitors (e.g., David Makin of Australia, Nick Cho and Peter Middlecamp of the USA).

Ian Stewart (woodchuck) kindly photographed an example featuring the Elektra Microcasa a Leva (background), Terra Keramik demitasse in cobalt blue, and two TORR tampers made from Palisander wood:

FINE PRINT: To participate in the above (the "Contest"), you must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. resident or Canadian resident. Home-Barista.com ("HB") moderators, sponsors, judges, and members of their immediate families are not eligible to enter. Void where prohibited. With regard to an entry ("photograph") you submit as part of the Contest, you grant HB a worldwide, perpetual, fully paid-up, non-exclusive license to publish, redistribute, create derivative works, or sell the photograph. The entry must be an original work by the entrant; any copyrighted full or partial photographs, images, or graphics submitted as an entry will be rendered void and ineligible. Prize winner will be determined by public poll. If you are selected as the contest winner, you agree that HB may publicize your name and the photograph you entered to win the contest. Apart from the prizes associated with being selected as a winner, HB shall not be obligated to compensate you in any way for such publicity. Each entrant shall indemnify, defend, and hold HB harmless from any third party claims arising from or related to that entrant's participation in the Contest. In no event shall HB be liable to an entrant for acts or omissions arising out of or related to the Contest or that entrant's participation in the Contest. There must be a minimum of six worthy entrants before judging begins. No prize substitution is permitted. Entrants may be required to verify their entry is their original work. To prevent ballot box stuffing, only members registered prior to May 10, 2009 will be allowed to vote.

Congratulations Tyler! Beautiful shots, both of yours. Nice idea to have great artwork as a backdrop. If you'd like to tell us a little about your photos, I would be interested in hearing about it. A job well done!

Thanks, everyone!

I am so excited to have won. The other three shots chosen for the poll are all very nice--which makes winning a real honor. I especially liked the depth of field on both fullsack and pjizzy's photos.

I took the winning picture in my house last Christmas after getting the mou cups as a present that morning. A local artist painted the picture in the background for our dining room. You can't tell from the photo, but the painting is of a really large pear. I arranged the cups to mimic the bowls in the background, to draw the eye into the photo, and to provide a sense of movement and frivolity; and I think the set up captures the unique aspects of these handleless cups.

I was inspired to take pictures of my cups by flickr photos from Mark Prince (of coffee geek). If he had entered this contest he surely would have won because his photos are all so cool. I will probably choose the black terra keramic cups, like the one in pjizzy's pic, as the prize because they look so classy. I'll post a photo of them for everyone when they arrive.

Here are some pictures of the cups. Sorry it took so long to get the pictures up. Terra sent the cups the week after the contest ended, but right after that, I got married and have been very busy planning, traveling and moving in the interim. Thanks to Terra for sponsoring this contest! Their products are first class.

Seriously though, congratulations on the cups. Oh, yeah, and on the wedding thing.
