Wiring question for bbq drum roaster motor

Postby beatstanfurd on Wed Feb 24, 2010 6:32 pm

Hello everyone,

I purchased a motor for my bbq drum roaster and have some questions with the wiring. I ordered this motor from Herbach.

Despite having a tech support line, they provide no support other than taking my info and promising to get back to me.

The instructions they provided was a single schematic.

According to the description, the motor is 115 VAC. So my question is which wire is the hot and which is the neutral? From the motor, there is a black, brown, blue and green with yellow stripe wire. I know the green with yellow stripe wire is ground and the blue and brown are wired to the capacitor. The blue should also be wired to one of the AC wires as does the black, but again, which is hot and which is neutral?

Why would the schematic have both 110 VAC on black and blue? Is it indicating this is suppose to be 220 VAC? To be honest, I'm not absolutely sure if the schematic or the product description are correct. Wouldn't be surprised if either/both were incorrect.

One last piece of info... all four wires currently are connected to a 2x2 square molex like connector. Appears to have been pulled from some existing machinery. What that might have been, no idea.

My thoughts are that the hot is the blue and the neutral is the black. What would happen if I wired it backwards? I was told it shouldn't damage the motor; it just wouldn't work. Also, can I test the motor to see if it works without the capacitor?

Thanks for any info anyone might be able to shed on the subject.

It's irrelevant to the motor; but it's good wiring practice is to put the starting cap on the hot side.

Jim,

Thanks for the response. I went ahead and wired it up with the cap on the hot side and its working.

Has anyone else used their power drill to rotate the BBQ drum. I cannot believe how well it works. It can be a little bit of a pain sometimes (using a zip tie to to keep it powered) but man it works great, especially at the high torque setting.
