Thermocouple placement

Postby BIKERBOB on Fri Nov 25, 2011 8:56 am

I am using a Behmor roaster and am curious as to where other users have placed there thermocouple.
Also what sort of temperature readings can I expect?

Placement would have a little to do with how you will use it since you can't make any normal temp. adjustments with a behmor. If you use the door opening approach from 1st crack on you might be able to get some sense of amount of drop. In that case avoid direct exposure to IR and not too close to door, somewhere in middle. Using a bead tip tc wire you can snake it around to find the cleanest readings. The Behmor also has a thermostat that can make readings rise and lower.

I am using a K type couple; initially I had mounted it on the chaff tray and would get 1C temps around 200C. I since have moved the couple to the rear of the roaster wraping it around the guards. I expected that the temps would go up. I am now getting around 300C to 1st. Seems high; will have to check the accuracy against boiling water

I have one taped to the bottom in front of the chaff tray and one hooked over the left edge of the old style chaff tray. They read 100 to 150F different. I find them useful for knowing how much to preheat before starting the roast and for seeing how my attempts at insulation are working. For tracking a roast given no way to control the heat I find it more entertaining than anything else.
