SC/TO Capacity?

Postby ian2kris on Mon Nov 08, 2010 5:45 pm

I am thinking of putting together a SC/TO setup, but wanted to get an idea of the maximum bean capacity. I have heard some mention maximum capacities as high as 1-2lbs/batch. Is that accurate. I would be using a rheostat to control energy. My aim is to have a controllable roaster that can roast a minimum of 1 lb. to the FC range within 12-15 minutes. Any feedback appreciated.

The assorted new turbo oven tops I've seen are 1200watts which can do a pound but I suggest looking for an old Galloping Gourmet brand top in nice shape. They are better built and some came in higher wattage. They can be found on ebay. GG put out 3 different wattage tops over the years, 1200w, 1440w and 1470w. There is a sticker on the tops that lists the wattage. So if a pic doesn't show the sticker or the wattage listed you can ask by email. Go with either a 1440 or 1470. The extra wattage will help get a better ramp with a decent load. The weak part of a SC/TO is the stirring ability of the stir crazy. I never used the SC bottom but have used the tops for years and would guess you could get to FCity with a lb. in 13+ to 15mins.

When I had mine, I found that I could do a pound in ~15 minutes, but the quality in the cup tended to be much better when I stuck to 12-14oz as I had more control and didn't just have the oven on full blast basically the whole time. Then again, I was typically using a heavy-gauge-but-not-short extension cord, which didn't help the situation.

YMMV, and many people have reported success with full pound loads. farmroast's suggestion of making sure you have a higher wattage oven model is a good one if your goal is larger loads.
