Roasting Timor & Sumatra with Behmor 1600

Postby cas99 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 5:04 pm

I just got a Behmor 1600 and various green coffees. My experiences roasting these have not been as good as with SA beans. Especially good was the Peruvian. I suppose Columbia was OK, but I do not like Colombian beans at all. I became enamored with Timor coffees while living for 20 years in Lisbon, Portugal.

Can anyone share their Behmor settings for Timor and Sumatra?

I roasted these on P2 with a batch size of 150g. I used a thermal probe and stopped the roast at 450 degrees Fahrenheit, usually a few snaps into second crack.

I got a Behmor a couple months ago and am loving it. However... I had a tough time with a batch of Sumatra Aceh FTO beans recently. The great thing is, no matter how much I messed up the roast it still tasted great (as espresso or thru a Clever Coffee Dripper).
What I learned is the Sumatra beans are soft and therefore need a gentler profile. Give P3 or P4 a try. I had the best luck using 7oz of beans with P4/D/one half#. I opened the door for about 15 seconds when first crack had been going for about 30-45 seconds and I stopped the roast when I heard the first of the second cracks. I'm a beginner so take it for what it's worth. I did do a half dozen roasts with this bean though so I got a pretty good feel for it.

A follow up regarding that last roast I mentioned. It's been resting about a week now and keeps getting better. I pulled an espresso that was so sweet... I had another

After a lot of experimenting with the Sumatra Aceh beans the best roast I get is with P3. 8oz/1#/B, for a 20 minute roast time. The beans come out pretty dark this way and it makes an excellent SO espresso.
