Predictive Roasting with Excel

Postby blowery on Tue Aug 11, 2009 4:46 pm

Just wanted to share something I made and find handy. It's an excel spreadsheet and graph that predicts upcoming roast temps, based on some fancy math around the last five temps during the current roast. It doesn't work against past roasts at all; this is just a to visually see where your current roast is heading.

You just enter temps at 30 second intervals and it does the rest. You get a little gray dotted line that predicts upcoming temps. When it can't make a prediction, it returns zero. The red line is actual recorded temp and the blue bar graph is the temperature delta over the previous interval. The spreadsheet also has the delta of the delta, in case you're into that kind of thing.

Now, granted, 30 second intervals are fairly coarse, but I'm entering data by hand, so it's about as fast as I can do it and juggle other bits of roasting. Hope others find it handy, and it requires a fairly recent version of Excel.

Oh, and for the "every 30 seconds" part, I use http://blowery.org/js/sound/demo/api/, Demo 0. Hit start and you get a little cymbal crash every 30 seconds. Hit stop when you're done to kill the noise.
