Klatch Carmen Estate 1750 Reserve

Postby EricBNC on Fri Oct 07, 2011 12:29 am

Anyone giving this one a try? I picked up a pound with my last order and finally got around to roasting some this week. At two days rest it was good enough that I roasted some more this afternoon.

This one turned out to be pretty good - the bit darker roast gave a touch more chocolate and sweetness to the finish - even at room temperature it was sweeter than usual. This is well worth the $5 and change per pound considering the ease of roasting and range of desirable flavor depending on the roast.

Your post had me immediately going to Klatch's website to see their green coffee offerings. Great prices! Its hard for me not to stay local, Sweet Maria's is on 15-20 minutes away.

I love your macro photo! What lens/lighting are you using?

Thanks for the complement Tom - the camera is a simple point and shoot called a Canon 12mp PowerShot A3100 IS. I saw it at Radio Shack for a little over $60 (probably a closeout) so I picked it up. It is set to auto and will flash sometimes but other times it won't.

I like Klatch and Sweet Maria's too. I went with Klatch the last couple buys because of the free shipping for orders over $50 they have been offering on a couple separate occasions. If I could walk into Sweet Maria's for my greens I would do that too.

Usually Carmen estate WP coffees are very bright but Tom at SM reported that his Carmen 1900meter micro-lot this year had a bit less brightness and more balance and body with good sweetness. This may also be true with this years lot from 1750meters on this farm.

Sweet would be a great description. My wife is not a huge fan of my coffee  as a rule but she is a good sport and will have a sip to be polite and a cup if it is OK. I gave her my cup of 1750 to sip and did not get it back. After getting a second cup she asked when I planned on roasting some more of it!

Here is the last of my Klatch Carmen Estate 1750 Reserve - 270g using 1 pound setting, P3, D w/time maxed out. Hit start and then dropped it back to 21 minutes. At 13 minutes I got the first pops - by 14 minutes in, it was rolling hard but (I am not faint of heart) I waited till the 15 minute mark to hit cool. Looks and smells good - will taste tomorrow.

Kudos to another roaster who shared this profile - I changed up the P4 recommendation (was for a softer Brazil) to P3 for this higher grown bean.

Stretching the roast time with the Behmor instead of the popcorn roaster brought out the chocolate notes even more. I get bakers chocolate in the middle that sweetens to almost a milk chocolate in the very long finish. It has a bit more body too but is not a heavy cup.
