You really got me thinking...

At the time the Behmor came out, it was touted as the first low cost bean roaster that would do a 1 pound batch.
There was no manual mode.

I wanted 1 pound batches and the only way (at that time, because of limited time allowed on hotter profiles) to get a 1 pound roast was using P5 plus pre-heat.

That bugged me but it was what it was.

That's exciting news, Zany! Way To Go!

Certain beans will smell funky. Of course, 'funky' is a subjective term and what is funky to one person may not be funky to another.

It's something quite cool to roast your own and enjoy the cup!

Happy that your detour into SM beans is working out!

Rwanda Rulinodo Bushoki's taste description is in line with what I tend to enjoy more than beans with predominate acidic high notes. Both are good but the dark flavors are my preference.

Edit: Just now started a 1lb (edit: changed it to 1/2 lb) roast of SM's New Classic Espresso Blend, Roast Weight 1 lb & P1 incremented to 20 min 30 sec. Will see how it goes.

OK, just finished that roast and it went quite well. Full City + roast and the beans smell great! Can't wait to pull shots with it in a few days after they finish out gassing.

Didn't know what to expect. I kind of botched the roast, we went all the way to 2nd crack before I pressed "cool".. whoops.

I went manual mode this time and the damn beans went first crack so much faster when I turned on the faster drum rotation. It went to 1st crack and then within 1 min I heard the 2nd cracks and there was still 3:00 on the clock before the Rosetta stone "C" procedure!

They came out Vienna roast level, but what I noticed right away was that there is no funky wood smell, like my previous beans from the local beanery! The beans cooled a bit and they have a legumes bean type of smell, like roasted smoked black beans. It was a new scent to me, cause for 3 years I have been getting used to that chestnut, wood tones. Now this was exciting!

I waited till today, and pulled a shot. I video taped the shot on my phone and uploaded it to youtube. I apologize its not the best of framing and my family is heard in the background :D , but I think its one of the most beautiful naked portafilter shots I have ever pulled. Not much blonding and the colour is very dark compared to the usual roasts I have done before.

The taste of this is extremely interesting. Its a combination of dark smoky chocolate(not overly bitter), a bit of sweetness, and a hint of spice like cinnamon. I've never tasted a shot with compounded notes! This has certainly been an eye opener. Now I know that good quality beans do make a HUGE difference in taste and aroma. This shot tasted like something I have never experienced in my 5 year espresso hobby; store bought or home brewed.

Charlene, thanks a million for motivating me to get the beans at SM, they were well worth it. I cant wait to try to other 11 blends I got and see how they turn out!

Charlene,
I look forward to hearing what you think of this roasting. I was never happy with roasting a full 1 lb in the Behmor, 12 oz of beans was as high as I would go.

If you don't mind, what was your time to C1 and to hitting Cool?

I changed my mind at the last minute, Will, and went with a '1/2 pound' roast using the 1 pound batch size and P1 auto. Shifted to P4 manual after 1C was going strong.

1C started at around 13 minutes (following a 2 minute preheat with the beans in the roaster).

I continued the roast part way through 2C (approx 1-2 minutes later) b/f shifting to cool down then opened the door to bring the bean temp down faster.

To get anywhere near a normal roast profile, 1 pound is obviously not in the cards for this roaster... at least not where espresso is concerned.

Charlene,

That's how I did it too - 8 or 12 oz, but select 1# batch size and P1 Auto. I roasted up to 12 oz in the 1600+ with no problem, but not more. Unfortunately, the timer limit keeps it from being able to do larger batches. Otherwise I think it could do a full 16 oz if it could be made to run long enough. Your time to C1 sounds about like what I was getting as well.

Once I got to cooling, after 3 to 5 minutes, I pull the drum and dumped the beans into a metal colander to cool them faster. (this was done wearing heat protecting gloves from my local hardware)

So how do you like the coffee now? I found this method to be a big improvement.

This is why I am planning on upgrading to a Huky in a couple of months. I really want a 1 lb roast plus pleasure of really controlling the roast profile.

I just pulled a shot of that 1/2 lb roast from yesterday, knowing it needs 2 more days of rest, and am impressed.
It was a very good shot. As luck would have it, the grinder was already on the money. 8 sec bloom, 31 sec shot, 18.1g measured in the portafilter and 35.6g measured in the cup. My kind of flavor profile: predominate low notes with lesser high notes.

I have you to thank for this, Will. Thank You. :-)

Edit: just noticed your Quest M3s on your equipment list. Look forward to talking with you about your experiences with it at some point, perhaps on a different thread as this one is for Behmor.

Wow, that's great! Sounds like the same experience I had when I stopped using P5 Auto on the Behmor.

I gave myself the Quest M3s for my BD this month. It absolutely love it. Definitely can't do 1 lb but it's so much fun I really don't mind. A different thread is a good idea.
