Is there a roaster's coop?

Postby Chert on Sun Aug 28, 2011 1:28 am

I have heard that there are businesses that have everything for the beer brewer to make a batch which the person then takes home to enjoy. Is there anywhere that any of you HB roasters know that sells time on a professional modest size roaster say 1-12 kilogram? In some communities it could be a good idea perhaps because one person may not really be able to justify the cost but would like to be able to roast enough coffee for a couple of weeks and to share.

It's common for coffee businesses to make their roasters available on a part time basis to others roasters in the community. Whether they would let even experienced amateurs do so is another question. Liability and damage to their equipment would certainly be a concern, as would compliance with local health codes.

But, you'll never know, if you don't ask. Be ready to answer a lot of questions about your experience.

A local roaster I was frequenting for a while was more than happy to let me use his Diedrich. Of course I would have bought his green beans had I taken him up on the offer ;).
